It was pretty evident that he loved her, even if that love wasn't requited. That one scene where he delicately stroked her cheek kind of gave that away, and there were a bunch of other subtle nods like that. He wouldn't have gone through all that suffering for her, especially knowing he would probably die from it, if he didn't care about her deeply.

What love story? We never got their love story, just an aftermath where he's trying to resurrect his love. We never saw them fall in love with each other, develop romance, struggle through relationship, earn each other's trust and commit to their partner.

Nah the whole game is basically an allegory for marriage.
Man, struggling to conquer his various inner demons (addictions, vices, insecurities).
But he fights his demons because his partner is (at the time weak), and he must be strong.
The catch: when a man frees himself from all his demons, he is a new man, albiet left vulnerable from the struggle of the whole ordeal.
He is left weak, and ends where now she must be strong for him.
They depend on each other against all odds.
Marriage.The final boss is a giant wedding-cake, and you are the little groom figurine that has to take his place at the top. Look at it.

It isn't the focal point of the game but Lost Odyssey has the single best representation of how an actual love story goes in it. That game nails so many adult themes (as in if you're 20 you probably won't get it fully) and is criminally overlooked.
You want to feel the gamut of human emotions, play Lost Odyssey. It hits every major theme from shit parenting to lost love to laughing with friends to the nature of a hero and what that means he sees and how it changes him.
