Soda dungeon is a really good time filler and if you have adaway there are no ads whatsoever to it.
Dragon hills is also a pretty good. I preferred it to time surfer just because the quests were better and a little more varied.

There are a few with ok gameplay but they're still mobages full of jewing. Terra Battle and Soccer Spirits come to mind as ones that aren't puzzle games and are pretty ok. Granblue has good combat but my god is the UI shit. chain chronicle was ok, but rip.

I think Candy Crush is quite good for what it is. For me, it's a great game to play when I have a few minutes of downtime and it's not feasible to play a more serious handheld game. For example, if I'm taking a poo, or if I'm waiting for a meeting to start, or if I'm waiting for a particularly slow game to load... just those little moments that occur throughout the day where you have a few minutes you're not doing anything.
By now I've probably sunk hundreds of hours into Candy Crush and its derivative games (Soda is the best one IMO). I have spent no money on them. These games are legitimately difficult. They are largely luck-based but there is some real strategy involved as well. They also have a basically endless amount of content; between the three games, you can keep playing indefinitely because they just keep adding more levels.
Is it what I would consider a legitimately deep game? Of course not. But there is a lot to be said for it, and they really do take the trouble to keep introducing new mechanics and types of levels.
The Worms games work really well in mobile since they are turn based and not bogged down for touchscreen and they don't have microtransaction shit that most mobile games have.

Firstly, why would the developers of a game good enough to be considered "good" offer their game for free? Developing games takes way too much time to not monetize it.
Secondly, any game that is initially free will inevitably be setup with IAP in mind. These games are not "free". Generally they allow the players to play the game for free up to a certain point where progression becomes nigh-impossible without spending money. The people that invest this much time into the game are already likely the ones to spend the most money, so they gradually ramp up how much money it costs to progress. This "freemium" model is the ultimate Jewery and is highly successful for some fucking reason.
The reason so many developers are forced to use the freemium model, subsequently making all mobile games garbage, is because of rampant piracy, especially on the Android platform.

Sorcery is a series of four games (the fourth yet to be released) and it's sort of a remake of a series of those old adventure books where it';d say your choice- turn to page X, that kinda thing.
Some game company decided to make this into a mobile game and holy shit is it good. You can go various ways and encounter various things, there are also a bunch of ways to go about each scenario, they're pretty long too and cheap as fuck.
I highly recommend these games to anyone.
