I played through every scenario with the only unique battles that ever happened for me being the Nobunaga against Yoshimoto one and the Incident at Honnoji
DW8E on PC is really shitty, make sure to get the PS4 version. In any case, SW4E is the better game.

First of all make sure you haven't replaced any officers with CAWs. Other than that you just have to make sure certain characters are in specific clans and have specific titles. Personally i always play as the minor clans so I haven't triggered any unique battles (other than the pre-battle events).

I haven't played SW4E yet but DW8E is decent. It's super fucking easy though and there's not a whole lot of reason not to just erect a flag wherever and start bullying everybody. Hell my last few games I didn't feel like fighting so I just threatened everyone else to surrender. Some tacticians are really good at that and my first CAW I played through with is extremely good at it for some reason.

It handles the snowball effect better, there's TONS more officer interaction, TONS more random events, and it can be quite challenging at times. Not to mention the game runs far better than DW8E (which I don't get). It's also a good deal deeper mechanically.

As far as characters are concerned, Ding Feng is the best thing to happen since 7, with Sima Zhao following behind at least in regards to historical importance.

DW8XL combines both DW8 and DWXL so has all the characters (except for Empires exclusive Xun Yu) and their stories.
Empires is just empires where in lieu of a set story its whoever you choose from the beginning and follow that guy through decisions you make.
And in case you're wondering here's the main difference between DW and SW Empires.
DW Empires is primarily from the pov of the guy you select from the beginning. You can have him be a ruler, a vagrant, a warrior who hops from kingdom to kingdom etc.
SW Empires you are controlling an entire clan and it is about fighting to ensure the clan achieves it ambition.

They're ports of the PS3 versions rather than the PS4 versions but other than that they tend to be fine. They get wonky if you tab out though. I know in 8XLCE the game softlocks if you tab out while talking to a blacksmith. in 8E the backgrounds distort and the menus fuck up but if you force it to swap menus entirely it tends to fix.
