Mostly because a lot of recent games have strong female protagonists as a means of being progressive or different.
It's kind of dumb to get angry about the tag itself, though, since it's attributing all the negative connotations of a recent phenomenon to something that a lot of games have been doing for a long time. Many of these games did female characters quite well. Nobody wants a Metroid game without Samus, and pic related is often considered the best protagonist in her franchise.

This may come as a surprise to those on this board on the spectrum but there is more than one perspective a narrative can be told from, and those who are capable of empathy (i.e., non-autists) find it enjoyable to view many stories from many different ways. Would Clocktower be as fun if you were a big, burly man that could just turn around and wrestle with the killer? Would Bayonetta be as charming if you were just some dude?
A narrative has many aspects that define it, one being the protagonist. A character has many aspects that define it, and contrary to what both the autists and the progressives arguing that it shouldn't make a difference, gender IS one of those aspects. The fact that I have to explain this to someone is sad enough, but if you still just want to go "women should not be seen in video games", then there's no hope for you

Gender is one of many things that define a character. It combines with other traits to create a character. A big, burly girl and a big burly guy will not be the same character if they are competently written, male and female protagonists aren't interchangeable. It does impact the narrative (provided it was competently written). And I never claimed having a female protagonist is praiseworthy, so please stop conflating this single identity of "people who are against my position" into one thing.
