I like spooky indie horror games but I'm terrified to buy them after I bought Gone Home thinking it was gonna be like Scratches. Seems half these games just tard out half way through and start shoving a message down your throat. Which I can handle but it's usually at the cost of throwing away the spookiness.

Why does nobody ever talk about SOMA anymore?
I mean, people are all ready to get behind "pls make Silent Hills herr Kojima" but i almost never see any discussion over recent horror games that were genuinely good.

People aren't interested in recent horror games. Quite frankly I'd rather just play what I missed because chances are I'm going to have a better time.

Also,
>"pls make Silent Hills herr Kojima"
Silent Hill was dead as fuck and quite frankly couldn't be any worse but Kojima is one of the last people I'd want working on a series where subtlety is a key feature in developing the plot and horror.

What did Jill mean by this?
>>
>>331981403

People are fed up with horror games being stealth games.

The monster sections in SOMA slowed the game to a crawl and were neither fun or scary.
>>
>>331979731
At least they are not making crowdfunding... Only redeeming quality.
>>
>>331981931
I have the same complaints.
Horror games generally aren't fast-paced in the first place and that's not really an issue, but fuck, I do like to advance at a decent pace.
>>
>>331981403
>Why does nobody ever talk about SOMA anymore?
It controls really, really clunkily, and it's a bit slow. Puzzles go from too easy to frustratingly difficult out of the game being obtuse. Fantastic setting, fantastic VA work, great monster and level design, just kind of wasted potential. It kind of had the opposite problems Alien Isolation had, even though they're both in the same genre.
>>
>>331981832
>Kojima is one of the last people I'd want working on a series where subtlety is a key feature in developing the plot and horror.

>>
>>331982218
I wouldn't exactly go that far, but god damn did MGS4 suck.

I feel like he does better when kept on a leash, and that's definitely something that wouldn't be happening with Silent Hills, especially del Toro sitting there sucking his dick.
>>
>>331981767

Costs too much. 20 bucks is still on the high end for indie games, but is at least cheap enough people will bite. 30 bucks is out of the price range people are willing to drop on a game.

>>331981403

Because people are tired of the "hide and seek" horror sub-genre. Even worse, you can't even look at the monsters. It was novel in Amnesia, but it's just boring now that every new horror game does it.

It's like Layers of Fear. It has 1 good idea, but they overuse that idea to the point of running it into the ground. It starts making you roll your eyes instead of getting surprised/scared.

>>331982169

To be honest, I'd be more excited if they did. Much higher chance of the game getting made. The only chance of it getting made and being done competently right now is for the idea to get picked up by a company.
>>
>>331982493

I enjoyed layer of fear to be honest. It helped it was cheap and short so didn't overstay its welcome.
>>
>>331981576
I thought the whole point of SOMA was to go for a less scare your tits off approach (which Dark Descent had, fuck that fucking water monster) and wanted to delve deeper into reality horror, with all the narrative pertaining to identity and the concept of self.
>>331981767
"In March 2016, Frictional Games announced that the game sold more than 250 000 copies, and that the company was close to break even with the game.[33]"
It's a shame to hear that indeed.
>>331981931
I can agree that the monster sections in SOMA definitely took the longest (with puzzles coming in close second), but were you genuinely unafraid the entire time?

A few of them were just frustrating, such as the RNG teleporting guy on the ship and the witch at site Omicron. But some of them were pretty pulse-pounding, like the guy in the server room or the laboratory.
>>
>>331982412
I don't get where all the hate for MGS4 comes from, I had a damn good time with that game and MGO2.
I can't think of a single part of the game I wasn't having fun with on multiple playthroughs, the best I can do is say that the london part is a little long, but even then it's fun to fuck with the stalker bots and the guards
>>
>>331982663

I liked the beginning of it. But they overused the "you have to spin around looking at different walls to progress" mechanic. The first few times it happened was awesome. But towards the end I was like "ok, I get it already".

>>
>>331982735
I meant more in terms of writing. Probably should have specified that. The few times you got to actually play were fun, though.
>>
>>331982791

That's the biggest problem it has by far, there was a huge amount of creativity... except in how the scares were triggered.

If he does another game like it, he needs to try out more varied mechanics for progressing.

Disturbing > attempts at being scary

Stuff like Space Funeral, for example, unsettles me much more efficiently than something like Amnesia or Silent Hill. The notion that something is wrong but it isn't obvious or that something is so absurd that it becomes unsettling really gets to me.

Then again, fear and revulsion are such individual emotions that it's hard to find a universal "trigger".

Pathologic is the most disturbing and uncomfortable game I've ever played. It's not scary at all, but I just couldn't bring myself to continue playing it because it made me feel so depressed.

Disturbing's good for horror (especially when involving the absurd or the uncanny valley like in your picture), but should be coupled with/lead up to moments of genuine terror. In my opinion, disturbing isn't enough on its own to constitute good horror. I appreciate the atmosphere and design work of SH2, but it lacks the "OH SHIT" feeling of genuine terror. I think SH1 is actually a more effective horror game than 2. That locker bait and switch in the school is amazing.
>>
>>331986850
>There must exist some point in the game where the players faces something physical

Must there, though? With skillful application of audio and visual cues, the atmosphere could be maintained throughout the game.

The only problem I see with this approach is that there is zero replay value for such a game, as once it has been experienced, the player knows nothing will happen.

I'm kind of wondering how Rides With Strangers will turn out. It's a game about hitchhiking with dangerous people. Gameplay wise it's pretty FNAF tier, but I think the theme itself is really cool because it plays to something that could happen in real life instead of a bunch of supernatural stuff.

I wish more horror games played to realistic scares like home invasion and stuff.

I assume you have to pick your words carefully with fedoralard lest he thinks you being nice to him is romantic advancement, and being the social retard he is makes him think he can turn that into sexual advancement.

I'm more curious about this lady.

The game isn't particularly hard as it is, but yeah that's probably why I never did a full playthrough, just felt way too easy knowing how to do everything and having a tommy on backup even if it was fun to use

she should have a choker with one of those cat/jingle bells so it makes sound when she's moving about. when you chop her head off the bell should fall to the floor in-game. Either that or she should have a ball gag but instead of a ball make a it a honk horn

Fuck I loved SOMA so much. Normally I can't stand grim hopeless settings, but there was something about SOMA that made me want to embrace the dying world's despair. And let's not forget the questions it raises about the nature of self and identity. That stuff can haunt you.

If you finished the game and enjoyed it, I recommend these two videos Frictional put out:

I played it.

I don't remember anything specific about it, just a vague recollection of it being a pretty mediocre RE "clone"? I certainly don't remember it being even remotely scary but my idea of what is scary rarely seems to coincide with most people's.

>Could you convince me to play it tomorrow night anon?

Just play it, if you don't like it after a couple of episodes then drop it. Just know it may be a little frustrating at first because the game has major framerate issues and the controls are a little clunky but when you get the hang of it it's actually a pretty easy game.

If you do drop it though I suggest you look up the ending on youtube because it's glorious.

Probably not as the game is not being pitched as an adventure game but a third person action game.

Unless you are just talking about the shears. Gardening tools and other potentially lethal everyday items being used as weapons in horror is not something even remotely unique to Clock Tower.

The Exorcist 3 was the first thing to pop into my head on seeing that image.

The only one that really relies on any of the other games in a meaningful manner is the one you played which completely fucking ruins the first Fatal Frame with revisionist creepy anime bullshit.

3 references 2 a bit but only in a trivial manner.
>>
>>331995892
You can jump right into two or one by themselves but FaFr 3 ties all of them together into one big fat story bundle. IMO 2 > 1 > 3 in that order for three to make the most sense.

>>331996593
>in a trivial manner

It's trivial because it's not an ongoing plot. You don't need to know anything beyond two characters from the first two Fatal Frame games survived traumatic events in which they lost people they care about deeply and so they are in the same situation the main character is in. Fatal Frame 3 tells you all you need to know so you don't lose anything by having never played them, the specifics of what happened are irrelevant.
