at the point of the choice there is no hint at the meaning of either symbol so a player who chooses the bird does so out of a desire for freedom, when in a later unrelated event the symbols change this does not change the original intention of the first choice.

It's interesting read to reshearch the development of BS:I.
There was going to be many choices thought the game that would lead to different endings like going to Paris or not. The Bird or the Cage was going to one of those choices though it's unknown what it's purpose was.
