10 years ago, they were ahead of the curve. The DS latched onto touch screens before the iPhone came out. The Wii cornered the market on motion control.
The 3DS though was just trying to grab the 3D fad that no one really cares about anymore, and the Wii U was aiming for the tablet market, but they couldn't compete with the iPad.
Now this is looking like they're trying to go up against smartphones in general. That controller is a cellphone with a couple of analog sticks. It'll be awful, because playing games on phones is awful.

First of all, don't make assumptions about me.
Second. we've had rumors of this controller for months, and while the Wii U allowed you to use a large number of controllers, at its core, the tablet was still the main feature. You take that away, and you just had an underpowered system.
There's still a lot more we need to know, and we don't even 100% know if this is real, but it's looking more and more real with each passing "leak", and if it's true, I'm not looking forward to what's to come, since I've tried playing a fair few games on phones without buttons, and they're not fun.
But what's more, is that if this is the big draw, then it's just a show that Nintendo is lagging. The 3DS did well because it was just basically a DS 2 with a 3D feature and improved hardware. Its gimmick wasn't obtrusive, but the Wii U's failure lied in that it was heavily reliant on a gimmick that other companies had already a market in.

3D was big for a couple of years, so they popped out a 3D console. Tablets were growing in popularity, so they put out a console with tablets.
Neither of these though were bringing anything new to the mainstream, and that's their folly.
