I don't personally mind these things, but I really doubt that a person not interested in the competitive scene be that interested in all of those aspects of the game and would find the single player campaign of a Digimon game at least slightly more varied. Digimon as a brand with a real identity didn't really start until 99 with the anime stateside, and it wasn't until 2000 that you saw a real video game.I'm discounting the virtual pets because while they mattered, they had a lot less mental presence while competing with toys like Tamagotchi
Meanwhile, Pokemon's market presence started with the games and then the anime, which was basically done in conjunction in the Anglosphere. Pokemon's scale for a game boy game at the time was also pretty amazing.

Then they made the anime even though they though it was going to tank and they got the best commercial ever.
Then they managed to make USA interested in the anime and after some time released the games because the anime acomplished it's purpose.
Then it became a fucking huge hit that everyone knows and has an opinion about whether they like it or not.
Digimon as a franchise is a mess and Bandai failed to make it stick.
