What went wrong?

WoW
>>
>>331739791
f2p nonsense
>>
Kept the autism based number manipulation instead of evolving to be more skill based.
>>
What didn't?
>>
Other people.

A necessary appeal to popularity to keep the game full, leading to the kind of people you get when you use the lowest denominator.
>>
>>331739791
nothing, Minecraft saved it from becoming trash
>>
>>331739791

Everybody promised to be the "WoW Killer" even though all they did was slap on a fresh coat of paint and made a shittier version of WoW.
>>
>>331739791
Every mmo has the same shitty gameplay compensating for a huge network lag.
>>
>>331739791

WoW morons killed the genre.

Before WoW, MMORPGs were really good.
>>
they lack freshness.

this is how many genres die out.
>>
>>331739791
the basic premise of those games.
you are supposed to continue playing after you've essentially completed the game.
>>
>>331739791
More efficient and convenient ways to socialize on the internet were developed.
>>
casuals
>>
They're all exactly the same
>>
>>331739791
The games generally start at the level cap
>>
>>331740240
This, and everyone wanting to get the same kind of money/success as wow instead of realizing that the genre will by it's very nature never allow another fluke like wow again.

The only truly successful mmorpgs are one's with large populations, player generated content and drama, and limitless roleplay potential and leveling.

It's supposed to be an enjoyable timesink you can do with or alongside other living beings.
>>
I'm not a child with almost limitless time to play.

It's still alive

WoW still have millions. Those autist that make daily thread is just prove of it.
>WoW thread : Nostalgia
>WoW therad : Would you resub
>WoW Legion : Will it save WoW
>>
>>331740124
no, not really
>>
the first mistake was having an acronym that looks like MPREG at a glance

it was downhill from there really
>>
People got used to the genre therefore the community went from alive and interesting to shit and sterile.

That's about it.
>>
WoW is still one of the funnest MMORPGS ever made
>>
They either go totally by the books and get boring easily or they go off of some korean gimmick that requires you to spend hours a day to even keep up.
I miss GW1
>>
>>331740550
And by successful I don't mean tens of millions of players like runescape or minecraft, or tens of millions of dollars like wow.

I mean having a large enough base of customers that they can profit very well.

And after the first year or so, an mmo that didn't have a bank thrown at it can thrive off of a dedicated 20-100k fanbase.
Even if it's f2p with conservative iap.
If they're lucky enough to get 100k who'll spend anywhere from 5-15 bucks a month just to play then they're basicaly done. They only have to work on upkeep and adding new cheap content.
And keep an eye out for creeps/psychos, keep the world going, fix bugs, pamper the whales, make the noobs feel wanted etc etc.
>>
>>331740098
there's a fine line between a mmp with big worlds and lots of people per server with lots of delay, or small worlds, low amounts of people and sub 100ms response times

WoW.

Everybody made superficial clones of an already kinda shit game. Increasingly shit RPGs with increasingly shit multiplayer mechanics.

I swear, everyone who made MMOs didn't know how to design a regular game and didn't like MMOs.

So now we've got a whole mess of shit games that are getting rightfully shut down one by one and some korean abominations that may as well be a bunch of bait hooks embedded in the skin of waifus that don't even exist ingame.
>>
They just need to make something that doesnt feel like another WoW but has good gameplay.
Shit like Wurm, or Arc Age but with bigger budget and thought to it
>>
>>331740995
WoW has been steadily losing subs since 2010. They have less than they did during vanilla WoW. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see where its headed.
>>
>>331742029
This makes me wonder when a naruto mmo is going to pop up.
For that matter, when the fuck are we getting a Harry Potter themed mmo?
>>
Until another winning MMO formula is found or made profitable it'll be all WoW-clone fest.
>>
MMOs being MMO only in name, not gameplay.

For the most part modern MMOs may as well just be 4-8 player versions of PSO with how everything is increasingly instanced, and how you ignore anyone not in your party in outdoor PVE content.
>>
>>331742173

Developers are pandering to introverts. People want to be unsocial retards even in games.
>>
>>331739791
Everything until Black Desert made it great again.

>actually having to devote time to the game if you want to get cool shit

It might not be perfect in every way, but its a fuck ton better than anything else on the market right now. Finally.
>>
>>331742436
>Black Desert
Hahahahahaha.
>>
>>331742029
>They just need to make something that doesnt feel like another WoW but has good gameplay.
Shit like Wurm, or Arc Age but with bigger budget and thought to it

BDO is literally Archeage if it wasn't shit.
>>
>>331742173
not having just one server for everyone is just lazy developing
the only issue is making gameplay fun with 200ms ping times
>>
>>331742457
>being this much of a casual
Have fun with Legion. :^)

Black Desert is shit.
>>
>>331742641
>>331742457
>>331742674

Literally filthy casuals.
>>
>All these morons saying WoW
MMORPG killed itself. There was a time when only a few existed, but now you have literally hundreds to choose from. People are so spread out across different games, you end up seeing many of them eventually fail.

You could have a company make a classic version, similar to EQ, Asheron and UO, but those games will end up dying just because of how saturated the market is.
>>
>>331742560
>not having just one server for everyone is just lazy developing
It is. It's not like modern MMOs have to worry about a market when 90% of the population don't bother with crafting/farming shit in the first place, so let them all play together.

With how instanced everything is in today's MMOs, just instance the PVE zones into multiple channels like other games have done already to help congestion if a spot gets busy.
>>
>>331742832
>just instance the PVE zones into multiple channels like other games have done already to help congestion if a spot gets busy.
but that doesn't allow for DIVERGENT GAMEPLAY to happen
>>
>>331742732
I'd rather be a casual than play literal shit.
>>
>>331742436
>generic themepark korean grind
>making anything great again
>>
Microtransactions
Endgame consisting of bosses with daily attempt limit for rare equips
The lack of raid bosses requiring greater than 50 geared players
the "WoW killer" mindset
Instancing everything
>>
>>331743085
>Theme park

Is this a common analogy? Because it's so accurate
>>
>>331743523
Ever since that one MrBTongue video.
>>
>>331743523
It's the perfect descriptor for an MMORPG where the different areas of the game do not cohesively connect with eachother on a meaningful level
>>
WoW.

What we need is an MMO Renaissance. Kill everything off and make MMOs on the level of vanilla/Kunark EQ again.
