If VR gaming kicks off will it destroy couch multiplayer? Surely if it works big titles will opt for it and make it required to play the game. Meaning to play that game with a friend in the same room you would need 2 expensive as fuck headsets. Could this be a real problem or am I over thinking this?
>>331676939
>Surely if it works big titles will opt for it and make it required to play the game.
Not gonna happen. Games for regular screens aren't going away, even if/once VR takes off.
Also, there are a few asymmetric games specifically designed to be played by one guy wearing a headset and a few others not wearing them.
Oh, and VR opens up the possibility for something else: online couch multiplayer.
>>331677797
Yeah but games you can just sit and chill with your buddies on are already limited thanks to money hungry companies that expect to sell 2 copies rather than1 per person. Most split screen games I come across nowadays are indie games and I just don't find them amusing for too long. I don't see VR taking off, personally I see it becoming another gimmick that passes like motion controls, its just something I see companies like EA abusing if they see the opportunity to.
>>331678667
>I don't see VR taking of
You're a special kind of stupid, nobody cares what you see or don't see, matter of fact is that it already has taken off. It's already sold enough to impact the market.
>>331676939
>Surely if it works big titles will opt for it and make it required to play the game.
Source: your gaping asshole
The reality is it will become its own distinct platform, separate from "screen" games, and that's just fine
>>331678857
This guy has the right idea, as well as becoming it's own platform it'll be an entire new form of entertainment, the movie industry will make movies for VR, already started too with smaller movies, so called "360 movies".
Then let's not even talk about the porn industry, can't remember the article but the VR Porn has already become the next big thing in porn and as always, if the porn embraces it, it'll succeed.

This is literally a VR game where the focus is couch multiplayer, you can still make games like this if you want to, the choice is up to devs
>>331679384
Have yet to buy a VR set, I'm thinking about the Hive but I'll see how the budget is looking, as well as what the buzz says when they start shipping.
I'm hyped as hell for VR, but I can wait until the time is right, ain't really that high on the priority list yet.
Also, I'm a bit scared about how much I'll love VR porn. I mean, sure, gaming aside, but porn.
>>331676939
Couch multiplayer is already dead.
couch multiplayer ain't doing so great anyway
>>331678843
I don't think you're getting the point I'm trying to make. I understand that as it is now VR is great and has a lot of potential but it also has a lot of potential to go to shit. Its expensive and companies can abuse that to make a fuckload of money without really deserving it. Maybe the same way certain cables are designed to wear and break over time these peripherals could just fuck up forcing you to buy another. Or games you can play with people in the same room like that bomb game I completely forgot the name of will end up limited to just low budget indie developers so you rarely get anything truly amazing to play with friends. And I guess I didn't mean taking off I just meant I don't expect it to stick around for very long. It'll take the same route as all these shitty motion controllers that came out eventually. As for movies I see the potential that shit would be amazing and fuck yeah why not porn with it would be great but gaming in general has become for the most part a money farm for big names, its rare any effort goes into making a game special anymore and if they see a way to abuse something like the oculus rift for more money then they just will.
>>331676939
>If VR gaming kicks off
It wont
>>331679947
That's true its been dead for a while so I guess I'm contradicting myself with just about everything I'm saying aha I'm just worried about losing the few games that are left with offline multiplayer, no matter how shitty they are.
>>331680410
You're talking like the movie and porn industry isn't bigger than the gaming industry... I mean, come on. This won't just die off, if anything, it'll become better. Headsets will get smaller, this isn't just a gimmick, it's an entirely new way of viewing media in general. It's the next step in the evolution of media, radio > TV > HMDs.
I mean, remember those roller coaster thingies where the entire thing moved with it, remember how cool that felt? Now realize VR has opened up the next logical step for that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IASj7qvCjg
As for gaming being a money farm, can't disagree there but the reason no special games are coming out anymore is because we reached the limitations of what we can do with games, this will be an entire new era.
But yes, some of your concerns are valid and surely some big companies will try to take advantage of it, but I doubt they'll succeed and we're still just in the first generation of HMD's, imagine how small and compact they'll get.
>>331676939
No
>>331676939
>If VR gaming kicks off will it destroy couch multiplayer?
It's pretty much dead already. Few games are still giving that couch coop option. It's slowly dying since the last gen
>>331676939
Online already killed it
>>331681065
I'm excited to see how far it goes and how amazing media that uses it can be, my only concern now is whether it will be killed early due to a bad reputation or something caused by shitty game devs. Right now gaming seems to be the big focus for VR and I don't want it being fucked over by a terrible first impression.
>>331676939
Nope. The way things are going right now, there is nothing coming to gaming that replace other gaming. The "Let's all make Call of Duty" meme has finally died and we're starting to see all sorts of cool games. A surprising amount of local indie multiplayer games too.
>>331682386
Yeah, although I kind of disagree that gaming is the big focus for VR, it surely is what the mainstream is focusing on tho, as well as what most people know about it. So yeah, I guess you can say it is the big PUBLIC focus of VR.
However, the porn industry has already taken it to heart and the porn industry alone will make it survive, it really has gotten that big already in porn. So there really is no chance it won't make it, even if we get a range of shitty games that almost ruin the idea of VR for most people, the porn industry will keep it afloat until someone makes that one game that opens up everyones eyes on how amazing it CAN be, I guess we can call it a core-game, and then everyone makes variations of that game for a while and voila, VR is back on track.
>>331683010
well the kind of device the porn industry will be targeting are mostly powered by phones so there is that
>>331683010
Thank god for perverts
Name one PS4 game which isn't sports that has local multiplayer. I'm not even sure there are any. I've just got a a PS4 and found out none of the fucking racing games have it.
>>331684103
Technically call of duty has local multiplayer.
Trackmania turbo is a split screen racing game, it isn't realistic like you might be after and it isnt out yet but you might wanna give it a try when it comes out on thursday. If you check the store there is a discover section dedicated to local multiplayer games, they're mortly indie but its worth taking a look.
>>331684103
Sportfriends
Helldivers
>>331683671
Yup, which means everyone basically. Not all admit it, but we're all perverts in some way.
>>331683278
Still, even if that's what they are targeting, it will only require a small percentage of the userbase to want higher end stuff with better image fidelity and so on for it to keep afloat.
>>331678857
This. I don't see VR as a temporary fad, but something which will coexist with traditional gaming. It's like how people were saying that tablets would do away with desktop/laptop PCs, yet those are obviously still their own market. Each has its own pros and cons, and it doesn't make sense for one to supersede the other.
>>331676939
What market?
The only AAA devs that still care about it are at Nintendo.
>>331684564
>>331684103
>Hivemind
Just got off the shitter to post about Trackmania after I saw that comment.
Which by the way, Trackmania just came out today. Installing it right now.
>>331684843
I already have it installed, its just one of those situations where they let you download a day early sadly. Still have to wait for the release day.
>>331684103

Burgerland here.
>>331676939
>kill couch multiplayer
Tell me, what couch multiplayer games have you played this gen outside of the WiiU and some PC indie games?
>>331685214
Also I just checked and google says it's the 24th, but Gamestop has had the 22nd date for a while and you can buy it right now too if you wanted a physical copy.
>>331685951
I know i do
>>331686339
I think they look cute
>>331676939
>will it destroy couch multiplayer?
That shits been dead for aw while now.
Every VR device is a gimmick except for the Vive. People will get bored of seated VR. Mark my words.
>>331689394
I see you never played WiiU games.
>>331689394
Not dead, the Wii U has a fair few and there are still a few games out there that allow couch multiplayer. Right now it's like it's in the latest stages of cancer but it isn't dead yet.
>>331689541
>nintendo
>hardware powerful enough to run VR
You've got nothing to fear then, you'll be able to keep playing your marios and zeldas.
>>331689541
Who does own a Wii U in the first place
>>331689541
>>331689751
Fuck nintendo.
>>331690421
Why? Their games are very samey and aren't necessarily impressive but they generally make fun games and that's what games are for isn't it? When the fuck did things graphics become more important than enjoying the game itself?
>>331686378
>that framerate
RIP Godzilla
>>331676939
I need VR 2 player with HTC, that is expensive but could be awesome.
>>331691174
PS4 can't into airstrikes.
couch multiplayer died several years ago. Just because Nintendo is 10 years in the past and still does it doesn't mean anyone else cares.
Online co-op has been a thing for most games since Gears of War 1 and Halo 3 made it the norm.
>>331693638
I see you never played WiiU games.
