Aside from FF7 it's the most loved FF by normies. All my normie friends have it as their favorite FF.

Because all the non-gamers and casual gamers that picked up an interest in RPGs gravitated towards the model WRPGs tend to use: freedom to create your own character and go wherever you want, at the expense of story and character development.
As such, any sort of linearity is seen as a negative.

It was actually the second FF game I could actually play for more than 10 minutes without falling asleep. The large environments were fucking awesome.

It's pretty flawed but people didn't really noticed because of the graphics and voice acting
The battle system is cool but after a while it gets tiring, hit the flying one with Wakka, the armored one with Auron, etc. The boss fights are cool, though
It was absolutely fucking linear
The sphere grid sounded cool but it's also really linear, you finish the game as you are finishing the character's grid and the "customization" boils down to "should I spend this lv 1 lock to give Lulu 200 HP?". For the post-game content the customization also doesn't matter as you'll need 150+ stats to even scratch the optional bosses, that means filling the whole fucking thing
Also it has the absolute worst batch of minigames of all time. Blitzball takes way too long, dodging lightning is terrible and don't get me started on that fucking RNG ridden piece of shit chocobo racing
It's a fun little timewaster.
