More than a single weapon was useful, the Sniper wasn't a straight upgrade to your spawn weapon, there are at least 2 powerups and Rocket Launcher per map, and the spawn system can be manipulated to provide consistent and predictable results without enemy interference.

The guns were also harder to use.

Yup.

You would always spawn at the closest available spawn point to your teammate, within an 18 meter bubble. There is no enemy influence on your teammate's spawn, so it's entirely up to you to spawn them properly.

I don't know the specifics, but there were specifics added in like line of sight detractors, death weighting, and enemy proximity.
Basically it became less about you and your teammate controlling your team's spawns, and more about the enemy influencing where you will spawn.

I did prefer it much more over 3. I liked the maps more since they weren't cluttered as much, and some of the bigger maps were a lot of fun in BtB.
And the weapons in general felt a touch more smoother. Like, they added some extra delays to animations and such to weapons in 3. Maybe for balance reasons though.

Small things, but they added up. Also the servers for 3 were shittier for some magical reason, for me anyway. Instead of getting full 4/4 ping bars in every match, it became 3/4. Which is frustrating as fuck to deal with.

Halo 1, sans Needler, was fine. Everything had a use in specific situations without becoming like Halo 5 where there are many checkmate situations(Storm Rifle/SMG up close).
So somewhere around 7 depending if you want an alternate headshot weapon, or fun guns like the Grenade Launcher.

The grenade launcher from Reach was a lot of fun too, and the energy sword. Can't think of any other weapons that are really needed, except for gravity hammer being needed for Griffball.

It was dependent on map and mode. I believe the options were "generic" and "custom", where generic would always spawn you with an AR and Pistol.
