Pretty fun. I find it easier to get into when playing with friends. The grinding aspects kinda suck. Getting into Hard mode initially sucks as you need to build multiple new picks in quick succession that are useless the moment you beat a new boss.
Expert Mode is kinda dumb, stuff being damage sponges doesn't add legitimate difficulty, just tedium.

It's fun. Though most of the fun comes from fucking around instead of trying to beat bosses or grind minerals or whatever. Like my friend managing to accidentally fill our shitty base with piranha when I left for a minute.

Yeah I love it. Played through it last year on mobile and got pretty invincible. Playing through it again on mobile right now. I should really get the computer version I know it's way better. Very fun to play with friends.

pc version is very clear, concise, and has lots of shortcuts and customization

Its the build up to everything that's part of the fun.
You start off slowly walking. You build to double jumping, grapping, floating, flying, etc. You just don't go from one to other in the blink of an eye though, unless you're playing with people who have spare shit to give you or you're speedrunning.

I'd argue that bullet sponges do add difficulty. Means you have to stay alive longer than usual, which is a clencher on bosses like the moon lord.
Surviving longer = harder difficulty, it's not that fucking hard to understand

Expert mode does add to the difficulty and it should be the default difficulty imo.
Before you disagree, I played this shit with a friend so monsters had like 4x more health than the default single player mode and also had twice as much defense and hitted for twice as hard which means it was like 16x more difficult mathematically speaking. Expert mode is good because you actually have a reason to not get hit, at default mode you can simply chug on potions and get hit as much as you want

Enemies aren't damage sponges in Expert; they just deal actually threatening damage
The higher defense thresholds only makes a noticeable difference on Mecha Skeletron, remember that you too benefit from increased defense more in Expert

If you've completed the game before and you've got experienced people to play multiplayer with, go play expert mode. The cool thing about that mode is that every player gets his own bag of loot after each boss, which makes progressing a lot faster. Gotta warn you though, getting started in expert is a pain in the ass, because everything kills you instantly.

Ladders are useless. Just dig around and you find tons of shit and ore. You'll make yourself I giant interconnecting display of caverns throughout the world. Ladders become useless pretty soon cause you find things like cloud in a bottle/grappling hook/umbrella that makes em useless.

Oh and don't use platforms to get up and down. They've become completely obsolete for mine shafts ever since ropes where introduced. Getting down a rope is as fast as falling, and you're save from getting your ass killed from falldamage.

I like to build cute stuff but it's really not that fun unless you're playing with other people. Nothing like seeing death notifications pop-up every couple seconds as people rush back to their items, seeing strange shit built all over the map above and below ground, or running around the whole world trying to get to certain NPCs.
When I played with my brothers and their friends everyone built their own little spot on the map but when invasions started we all rushed back to my baby bro's little fishing cabin. Cluttered with anvils, trophies, and banners it was realy comfy. There was a little dock leading to a deep lake caused by exploding NPCs that we eventually wired to light up so we could see all the bullshit shooting at us from down there, and a cannon on the roof just to do something about all the monsters knocking at our front door.
