How is it that this decades old game is literally more fun than Elite: Dangerous, Star Citizen, No Man's Sky and EVE combined? What did they do so right?

Fighting is literally spin2win
Missions don't mean jack shit except for credits, which can be got by one exploitable early game trade run better
Nothing to spend credits on but making more credits faster by doing that one run, and it won't take you that long
It's not a good space game compared to any other space game, even unfinished ones like Star Citizen and simply non-existant ones like NMS. Elite at the least lets you land manually.

Here's the thing, every space game has glaring flaws. That's why Star Citizen is $100m+ in crowdfunding; because it's attempting to do the solution to all of those flaws (dynamic economy, intelligent AI, world building, nothing important left to RNG, ship design, job system etc.)
It's just simply not finished.
