What game should I start with if I want to get into the Persona series?

You should start with 3 FES. Wait a while, then try 4 or else you'll be burned out. If you become interested in other Megami Tensei games, you should work your way to either DDS or Nocturne.

Depends. Do you like dating sims and horrible dungeon design? Then start with 3.
If you like dating sims and somewhat less horrible, but still bad dungeon design - try 4golden.
If you like more traditional jrpgs with better stories, characters and battle system - start with persona 2: Innocent Sin (psp), and finish it off with p2:eternal punishment (psx, psp in moonspeak only).
Personally i think p2 is the best in the series, but i have to warn you that the psx version of eternal punishment has horrible menu design.
