Look up 1 and 2 cinematics and the lore and events within those two and then play Warcraft 3 (RoC first, TFT second). Maybe there is some short novel or comics book out now that covers the first two but I don't really think you miss out on skipping them, its only important to know what the previous events were.
Warcraft 3 is a timeless masterpiece and you are definitively missing out on not playing it if you like Warcraft in general. It really stands out for a game that is 14 years old and still plays and looks so well.
Also, thanks to the rising player numbers in China, Blizzard has started patching the game again and there is a chance of it becoming a relevant esports game again.

Warcraft1 doesn't have much lore and it's pretty clunky.
Warcraft 2 is pretty okay control-wise (pretty similar to Broodwar, still pretty intensive mechanically), the plot is still humans vs orcs but a ton of plot-relevant characters that get mentioned in WC3/WoW appear.
I'd recomment Warcraft2, is a good RTs game and the campaign is fun, but don't expect to see many similarities between the lore you know from WC3 onwards except names and factions.

The eye of sargeras was not something Illidan was able to draw power from, it was the tool to destroy the frozen throne. But Maeiv interfered and was able to destroy it.

The reason why Illidan didn't outright attack Malfurion was because it was his own brother. But I wouldn't be suprise if Kael'thas wasn't there to mention about Tyranda before Maeivs wish to execute him on spot. Illidan would have broken free from the roots and been able to defend himself.
Illidan is not stupid. Why would he oppose Kil'jaeden when Outland has plenty of demons that are part of the Burning legion?

It's sort of a sad story, right now, thanks to the green fire quests we've learned Illidan was hard at work trying to keep his promises.
He was trying to recreate a well of eternity out of souls and pure emotion for the Blood Elves to use, as he promised them power and a cure for their addiction. The energy was blue as well. If you notice a lot of the demons in the Black Temple use a blue flame, especially during the green fire quest. This is important because the way Fel energy and Arcane are represented by Green and Purple respectively. It was a whole new way to feed their addiction to magic, and as it turns out, a lot of demons are just creatures who had their home planets devoid of magic. They become slaves to the legion for because of this, they feed off of the Fel magic they produce.
Becoming Illidari is a the simular to being a refugee, a blood elf who wasn't welcomed in the Allaince, a Naga that isn't really welcomed anywhere. I wonder if Lady Vash had a falling out with Azararha and the Old Gods, and that's why the Naga heard Illidan's summon. The Broken Draeni who at the time had no allies or friends to think of, their own people disgusted by them, and finally demons who were able to escape the Legion, and join Illidan who had promise everyone freedom. Illidan as far as we know is just someone who really wanted tomake his brother proud and help his friends.
