It isn't. Take 64 and TTYD, remove everything fun about them and replace it with... pretty much nothing and you have Sticker Star.
It's for the most part not bad in the sense that it's competently made and mechanically sound but neither the gameplay nor the writing can carry it.
For all the shit that sticker star gets, I did like the more open structure of the game. That and the boss battles when you didn't cheese them.
So did Miyamoto lose it? He was supposedly responsible for gutting the game.

No, if I was Miyamoto I would be saying fuck the story and use already established characters which IS & Tanabe would fuck up even more and use only Toads. You can expand gameplay in interesting ways and still maintain a new good story and add new enemies to it. They just have to not be lazy fucks about it and put in a lot of time into it with the original team.
