But it's dead

Ratz is fucking awesome and my favorite instagib based game. Shame only about 10 people max are on at a time per day. They even just released a level editor...after the game already died

So is its genre.

I want this fucking meme to die.
Arena shooters are dead in general but if you want to play, Quake Live is your best bet since that is the only one having a playerbase, even if its small.
So either that or the new Unreal Tournament.
is UT3 still played?
Wait for Reflex to come out of EA

I still find full servers in Quake 3.
The new Unreal Tournament is free right now, was probably the most fun I've had playing a game in years since I don't have to rely on teammates in high level play like all the current popular shit.
Rise if the triad (2013)
Games on steam/gog cross play every saturday
Quake Live.
Or you can play with those guys from /vg/ who regularly play UT together.

Lovely Planet is the most challenging FPS game I've ever played. It makes it even better that it goes for the least edgy aesthetic possible.
I will shill some open source arena game. Copy pasting a post i did back then:
Red Eclipse.
An open source fast paced arena FPS. Has a parkour system (similar to Titanfall,). Every weapon has two different shot attacks (you can even use a sword).
The game is like 5 years old and it's currently in 1.5 version.
It has a small but nice community. But right now, almost all the great names had left (all of them grew and now started working) and just play every now and then. So i think it's the best time to start playing for new people.
A video i did back then:

Fun fact. Microsoft used it to showcase a technology they were working on:
