HP = Your body.
MP = Your mind/soul.
Makes sense to me that you'd die/collapse if either of those things reached zero.

I think I remember a fanmade Puella Magi RPG doing that or something. (In this case the soul gem being your reservoir of MP.)
It honestly isn't a terrible concept. Makes more sense than say for example SMTIV, where you can nuke mobs pretty much freely once you get MP regen.

Star Ocean 3 did this beautifully because it was the same for enemies and bosses, Why try to kill a boss with 20million HP when they only had 500,000 MP

The plot twists get laughed at but i was actually really into it. I dont normally play these types of games though so maybe my taste isnt as refined, but i loved making items, the music, the areas, the battles, the story fuck me i cant find anything i dislike.

Star Ocean 3, don't know about other games in the series.
Physical special attacks take your own HP, magical special attacks take MP, if either runs out a character dies. Applies to enemies / bosses too and there's weapons that inflict both HP and MP damage, though I never bothered to find out whether some bosses are easier to kill by draining their mana.
