I guess I can't speak for all forests, but I've been to more than a few, and I agree with him. Pretty much Every forest I've been too has a huge density of shitty trees and short grass if any at all. Maybe that's just what it's like to live in the midwest as opposed to scandinavia or the tropics. Though Florida is pretty similar in that way.

Forests like OP's pic are too dense and dark at ground level for much grass to grow.
It's kinda shit because it is a freemium game but The hunter has quite the realistic forest.
same could be said for dayZ end shit. most games and most definitely no mans sky will have little collections of 40 trees and call it a forest.
A forest with such a dense treeline doesn't have such a large amount of grass and bushes in such a climate as in the game.

Because they hired biologists to help them design the place and make sure they got everything right. In the end it was worth it because it's the only game forest I've ever been in that felt like a real forest.
