I would advise against playing Pillars of Eternity. Even the biggest Obsidian cocksuckers on RPGCodex ultimately found it mediocre.

I'll admit the beginning of the murder can be a little slow when you don't know what to do. Also once it's time to do quests, ask guards about where you're supposed to go (it's that rainy area with zombies) or you'll get rekt.

I played a bunch of cRPGs, old and new.
Arcanum and PS:T can get away with bad combat because the writing is excellent. PoE's is average at best. The plot makes no sense and the characters are boring. Yes, there is Durance, but out of 11 party members in a game where you usually want a full party, he does not save the game alone.

Div:OS suffers a bit from no characters and shitty story, but its turn-based combat is second only to ToEE's or maybe even better
PoE is a mess with its retarded attribute system, terribly designed encounters, no interesting utility magic, shitty buff&debuff/resistance&immunity/dispel system, almost no reactivity for anything (murder an entire house of nobles, no one cares, everyone dies in the cellar of the asylum, no one upstairs cares), shit itemization, largely crappy characters and a terrible villain. And the player stronghold is a fucking abomination.

Anyway I feel like it's a bit unfair to bash PoE so harshly. It's a bold move to release a cRPG in 2016, the genre is nearly dead and PoE was enjoyable. I want more attempts to be made, not publishers and developers alike to be terrified of even attempting something that doesn't follow the current trends of the industry.

Arcanum writing is uneven, also PoE combat is nowhere nearly as bad as Arcanum combat. The plot makes sense in PoE and I find that most characters are good, they just aren't all melodramatic large-than-life smart-asses prone to huge monologues. Eder in particular is a very good character that isn't overwritten and is believable.

Install the unofficial patch and the high res patch. The gameplay isn't THAT clunky. Combat is not fun at all but if you play a mage, it's not really an issue. You can also try a charismatic character and let your followers handle that for you.
Honestly try again, it would be a shame to miss it. I'm currently in the process of writing the script for a video where I rant for a while about what makes Arcanum fantastic and I don't even know where to stop.

People who don't like PoE, what aspects of it you don't like?
For me, the gameplay and writing were pretty good but the lore was just too... fantasy. Everything was just too magical and too suparnatural. It didnt feel normal. I couldn't invest myself or bring myself to care about the gods or races anything.
I kind of like my RPGs with one foot in solid reality and one foot in magical realms. A balance.
I can't believe RPGs have the worst stories and worst characters of all video games in recent times.

There was a poll back in 2013 where people who donated to the kickstarter can vote between making Torment RTwP (real time with pause) or TB (turn based)
Basically, if you chose RTwP, they warned that the game will be littered with trash mobs like Planescape.

im currently running a character that is basically a monk. using unarmed and a bit of psi through psychokinesis for force emission and telkinetic punch.
good fun.
the character progression is pretty fucking great too. you can choose between a classical xp system where you get xp from kills or finishing quests. or the oddities system where you get xp by picking up items scattered around.
