I thought 8, 16, etc... bit meant number of pixels.
8 16 and 32 bit were representative of color depth, and how many colors could be displayed at one time as well as sound channels. anything after 32 as far as visuals and sound quality goes is meaningless until we have monitors that display higher than 256 brightness values per pixel

Theoretically it goes up 2^64 bytes, or 16 Exabytes. So yeah, technically there's no limit.

The growth of PC processing power and memory sizes has started to decrease in the past few years, and unless we get some brand new fad to boost the growth again, bit like how games did push home PC specs forward quite a bit in 90s, we might be dealing with mere couple hundred GB of RAM by the end of this century. Especially since cloud-computing's becoming more and more common nowadays; even some upcoming Xbone games use network connection to link up all the available consoles and their servers in the world to provide some advanced physics-driven destruction calculations in the games.
