The only people who dislike The Evil Within are casuals who wanted a generic run and gun third person action game. They didn't take the time to learn the game or its intricacies.
It brings the survival horror genre to new heights.

GTA3 is the worst 3D GTA by far, it laid the foundation, but lacks the characters, mission variety, writing, and mechanics of the future GTAs. VC had better characters and arguably better mission design, but GTAV is superior in every other way, and VC feels very dated by comparison

I've been gaming since the 80s kid. I'm just not blinded by nostalgia. I view games objectively by their quality, not by how they were for the time or how I enjoyed them at the time I played them.
I enjoyed many of the older titles, but fact of the matter is they've almost all aged very poorly and don't hold a candle to the modern games that are best in the genre. What little joy I derive from playing these games I grew up with nowadays is from the last remnants of nostalgia, not the games themselves.
