Escapism =/= being something completely different to yourself.
For example, I play Xenoblade X be vase I want to experience tearing through Alien super-fauna in a walking tank spreading good ol' colonialism to the stars. However I play as male because I'm comfortable with myself and it's more easily identifiable as myself within the escapist fantasy. Being a girl would add nothing to the experience.
In contrast, in Dark Souls 2 I made myself male in order to integrate better with the escapism, but after finding that coffin I stayed female because I only found out what it did 5 hours later and there's a neat classical myth aspect to it.
