3 is far more sandbox style.
It's all about you being able to do what you want,
In most cutscenes you can pull your sword for example resulting into the situation escalating - Or you don't and try to solve it peaceful.

story is annoying.there are always fixed events that basically force you to experience them because they lock off entire areas. so its reallly hard to get certain endings without using guides because you never know when an event triggers that moves you forward in time, making you miss another event that you actually need.
the fighting is better though in my opinion. it has a parry mechanic, which makes you enter an instant kill mode against normal enemies. you basically chain instant kills with qte. but the parry can be used against boss enemies too, letting you hit them with normal attacks between their attacks.
wots4 felt awful to me because the fighting seemed very random and luck based, forcing you to spam a couple overpowered moves over and over to ensure victory. here you can properly fight against bosses and strong characters using actual skill.

Personally I enjoyed it more than 4 because of the freedom aspect and how time progressed compared to 4. I was pretty disappointed with 4 when I found out they've removed stuff like partners, begging and a whole lot of fun stuff.
Is the combat better or worse than 4? The way of the samurai games really don't have much going for them except for the combat.

Combat is just one part of the game. It's a pretty comfy game to get yourself immersed in but wots4 did a terrible job with that by taking out the mini games and turning it to a grindfest.
4 on pc was a mess and never got fixed. Not interested.
How is the companion system? I wasn't keen on how it worked in 4, and it sounds like this one uses it a lot.

Not that anon, but it had framerate issues, occasional crashes, and a few bugs (title screen lockup until game is unfocused). While most of those have been fixed, it still has some audio issues.

I knew they would redo WotS3 after how decent the WotS4 game did on steam.
Cant wait to play it again as WotS3 has over 26 endings and some of them are fucking brutally hard to get.
Favourite ones I got were the one were you sell out the girl but just as she is about to be burned alive the last retainer to the clan she was apart of runs out to save her and I decided to turn on the people I sold the girl out to and went back to back with the dude.
We died in the end but we killed the bastard who wiped out her family.
