The only time I did that was with early Minecraft when it was like 10 bucks I believe with the promise that I would get access to all future releases.
I spend way too many hours in that game so it didn't really hurt in the end but I'm never buying an unfinished game again.
Buying early access game is like going to new restaurant where you need to pay in advance.

i don't encourage early access or kikestarter in 90% of cases but there are some that work and we wouldn't have the great games we do without them.
