So I just finished Quake 4 and thought it was pretty good.
Pros
>Movement Speed post-Stroggification was pretty good
>Gunplay was great, rushing Strogg fags with the shotgun was satisfying as fuck
>Good level design, "backtracking" actually spawns new enemies and leads you further through the story
>Friendly AI isn't retarded
>Every weapon has its use
Cons
>Gameplay pre-Stroggification is a bit boring, game took a bit too long to let you go fast
>Bosses were somewhat easy
>Dark Matter Gun made the final bossfight into a pushover
>Textures look like complete shit
>Game is too dark even with brightness on maximum
>Only some guns have flashlights for some goddamned reason

Only played 3 and 4, tried 1 and 2 and I can see why people love it, but I cant get into those games anymoresame with Blood ..., loved 3, 4 was okay, loved the pistol, everything else felt like garbage but the game had its moments.

err, q2 is the worst of the real quakes. they lost several important level designers between 1 and 2, quake's levels are an extension of what was learned in doom, they are masterpieces. q2s levels tend to be meandering back and forth bleh fests. good enemy variety in q2 though, they throw new stuff to you until near the end

the sound is very low bitrate/quality by today's standards, and on top of that they heavily compressed the sounds, so they all really pop, they don't have much "warmth" to hide their low bitrate nature
I've never considered it a detriment to the game, quake has the most iconic sfx of any game to me, but i could see it feeling odd to ppl now, especially headphone wearers
if guy is playing using headphones, i suggest speakers instead, and try to get the original soundtrack for q1..the weapons aren't weak you're probably just a scrub :D
