>Phoenix Down supposedly only wakes you up from a knocked out state
>Damages undead enemies

Explain???
>>
Undead enemies die from healing and reviving because they have negative health and going from negative health to positive health is just like dying but backwards.
>>
They're merely unpretending.
>>
>supposedly
Supposed by whom?
>>
>>330676453
People who say you couldn't phoenix down aerith
>>
>>330676140

But that would mean hitting them heals them
>>
>>330676679
No because damage is applied in a multiplicative manner while healing is additive.
>>
>>330676679
Not that guy but the whole "healing hurts undead shit" comes from DnD. In DnD there are things like positive energy plane and negative energy plane. All healing spells draw power from positive energy plane while undead draw power from negative energy plane, the same plane also powers all "kill" or "hurt" spells. That's why "hurt" spells heal undead, while healing spells hurt them. Normal damage acts normally because it just effect their bodies, it doesn't give them any energy.

You know the

It wakes him up.

Why didn't Cecil just use a gold needle on Palom and Polom?
>>
>>330677189
I don't know if it was in the original but DS remake clarifies that esuna and gold needle doesn't work on people who turned to stone voluntarily.

When will you faggots learn to differentiate between narrative and gameplay?

>why didn't they revive aerithu-chan?
because the plot demanded that she died. period.
>>
>>330677350
>reviving instantly kills undead
I remember, at least in some early ones, the life spell just did major damage not outright destroy them.

The only thing you added was your worthless opinion.

The writers have failed if gameplay and story contradict each other. They should be in sync, story and gameplay should drive each other.

>>

Yes, because normal damage just hurts their physical bodies, it doesn't transfer any energy to them. The whole "hurt heals" applies only to spells powered by negative energy like cause minor wounds Spells like fireball, thunder etc. work normally.

Sephiroth's sword does like 9999 damage if it gets you, nobody could survive that. Which begs the question why didn't he just use this form when fighting you at the end of the game instead of using that pathetic spellcasting form.

I always wonder why people nitpick FF7 (even it is ironic at this point) when people died in 2, 4, 5 and 6 as well.
>>
>>330681443
Because they haven't played any of them, but they know some tidbits of 7 because of its popularity.
>>
>>330681112
And caring about writing in games, particularly in story driven games such Final Fantasy VII is bad because...?
>>
>>330681443
The same reason they hyp Aerith death in the first place
>>
>>330681443
because no one on this board (except me) is old enough to have played those

that aside, it was hard to care for guest characters, and old men dying
>>
>>330681660
I think you misunderstood my post. Which is funny, considering you called yourself an intellectual for caring about writing in videogames.
>>
>>330681882
It was real fucking easy to care when 4 gave you a shit party for almost the entire game and then takes away the only reliable healer/caster you have. Oh boy, the next area and dungeon has monsters strong to basic attacks and won't let you use weapons? WHOOPS
>>
>>330681882
>FF2 had so many guest characters die that in the remake they formed their own party to fight the last boss in the afterlife
>>
>>330682250
his MP was shit, who cares
>>
>>330682402
I'm talking about P/P dying then the game leaving you with the worst fucking character in the game. No MP, no spell damage/healing, no special abilities. In order to do real damage/healing you have to caste higher level spells, but you can only get 3-4 off before you're completely done.
>>
>>330682608
except they didn't die

we're talking about characters that died and stay dead

they just left your party and are fine in the ending
>>
>>330677350
Not true in Final Fantasy IV.

In FFIV, Cecil's last weapon he gets as a Dark Knight is super powerful and absorbs the health of your opponents, restoring your own life. A vampire sword that most likely deals negative energy damage.

The vampire sword restores health to undead enemies when you fight them. Which is a huge pain in the ass, because the last boss you fight as Dark Knight Cecil is a lord of the undead, and is undead himself.
>>
>>330682703
>all those death scenes in 4
>they were actually fine all along for most and it was just an excuse to make them leave your party
almost made me forget that some did die, was hard to take anything seriously by the end
>>
>>330675974
Healing items and spells are a unique form of magic. This unique form of magic harms ghosts and undead beings as opposed to healing them like it would for most things. Best way to describe it is like fire elemental magic, it hurts plants monsters but has no effect on fire elementals. Cure is its own element
>>
>>330681930
And you should reread my post. I haven't stated, nor implied being an intellectual or implied being intellectually superior. I was merely pointing out your simplemindedness. If you're implying playing vidya is a waste of time, then let just say, as a medium video games deserve to be critiqued and praised for their merits just like all other forms of media. As far as entertainment goes, it's not a waste of time as long as there was some satisfaction gained.

>I haven't stated, nor implied being an intellectual or implied being intellectually superior.
That is exactly what you did. You insinuated that I'm intellectually lazy because I overlook a rather minor contradiction in a plot, which implies that you see yourself as an intellectual for caring if a phoenix down would be able to revive a aerith or not (still hilarious to me).
>As far as entertainment goes, it's not a waste of time as long as there was some satisfaction gained.
Then why are you so bothered by this plot contradiction? You, as an intellectual, should know that writing a perfect story in a scope of a RPG is almost impossible. You might as well ask why people get sick in-universe or why people lose limbs when potions exist. The story in story-driven RPG serves as nothing more as an incentive to continue the gameplay challenges. So, if the story, despite its flaws, manages to entertain the player, what right do you have to call him intellectually lazy?

What it comes down to is a extremist black-white view that immediately condems the writing of something because of very minor flaws, which is childish at best.
>>
>>330680713
lol'd

thank you sir
>>
>>330681443
Because when Galuf died in FF5 his friends actually did try to use healing items and magic in him.
>>
aerith is shit
>>
>>330684829
Because, when it comes to games that are developed from the top-down, like many RPGs, the game mechanics should be consistent with the setting, but that's besides the point. Saying that peoplet should die, or certain events to happen when it doesn't make sense on the bases of logic, characterization, or setting. Yes, I do realize it's impossible to perfectly simulate reality on a video game, and some measures have to be abstract with those interpretations left up to the player. But making the conciouss effort to overlook the flaws and inconsistencies in narrative, prose, and plot structure IS intellectually lazy. I really hope you don't take this approach when it comes to literature, and movies.
