Far cry had good map editors, in fact the custom made i made, and others I played were far better designed and fun then the average halo ones.

That being said, I had much more fun in custom games in halo 2 and 3.

Publishers prefer for their games to have a clean end-of-life, so you will buy their next game. There's no value in producing a game that appeals to you for longer than the review accepted 10-50 hours.

no, halo 2 had hacks mode. Although you need a modded console to fully enjoy this track. If you thought the halo 3 forge games were fun, you don't know halo 2 mods. Real race tracks, modded weapons, totally new shit and everything else.

This stuff isn't even hard to get still if you can mod an original xbox

What made forge so awesome was its accessibility. It was a great, but more importantly, easy to use mod platform.

If I ever make a game I want to have a forge mode.

Even as an Unreal Engine 4 platform anyone with the SDK could make maps for it, but Forge has that "so easy a caveman could do it" aspect nothing else can replicate.

I know Reflex has a realtime level editor that can be edited online. It works really well too but there are no custom games systems in place

Pretty much any pre 2006 shooter worth it's salt.
UT4 and reflex have custom stuff and mod tools but they wont be finished till 2017 at best.

If you were going to make a spiritual successor to the Halo Trilogy for PC what would you do?

Go specifically after a certain game or try to reach a more refined point between the three?

What weapons and vehicles would you have be in it?

Obviously you should have Forge mode, custom games, theater mode, fileshare, splitscreen, LAN and controller support, because those are obligatory features.

My favorite was Hide and Seek on Hide and Seek Town. When Reach came out, I made an exact replica of the Hide and Seek Town map on day 1 so I could be the guy that made it, only to find out that you couldn't be invisible while moving in Reach. Completely killed my interest in Reach customs right there. I played a few that were decent later on, but Halo 3 was the absolute peak for the series in terms of player-created custom maps.
