So /v/ what's the general consensus?

Is it worth retail price? Or should I wait for summer sales?

How's the long war mod coming?
>>
>>330050931
I like it.
>>
>>330051042
So wait can you choose each team member's gender for customization? Can I make a team with nothing but waifus?
>>
If I didn't play any XCOM before, would this be a decent jumping in point?

I watched the TBF LP while playing FE and overall enjoyed the game.
>>
Its GOTY even with its flaws.

>hows Long War coming
Fuck right off.
>>
Who gives a fuck, the most annoyong mechanis of "lol you move, now the aliens get a free turn" is still there. And now that the aliens have proper vision mechanics it feels even more retarded and forced
>>
>>330052104
You should jump in at Terror From The Deep so you understand the story.
>>
>>330051757
yes
>>
>>330052221

This.

It's still a bit too buggy, but the actually gameplay is great.
>>
>>330052104
sure why not
But I'd recommend picking the last one as its dirt cheap right now
>>
>>330052806
>free turn
but they don't, they get a free move
do you also want them to be able to shoot at you if they are the one moving in on you?
>>
>>330053149
Like i said, shitties mechanic, it's still there. Do the math,
>>
>>330052806
>>330053914
This meme seriously needs to die. They scatter to cover because if they didn't you'd have basically guaranteed flank kills.

So it's either that, or alternatively more rigid positioning/patrols where they'll always end their turn in cover and somehow guarantee to not be flanked if discovered. The outcomes are ultimately the same.
>>
>>330053914
If they simply wandered the map you'd run into the chance of getting instantly blown up from being flanked
>>
Well, it's kinda buggy, but I'm still having a lot of fun with it.

>Exclusively play Iron Man mode
>Eating shit all the time

Good times.
>>
Besides, the fact that some customization options are experience unlocked is also a totally retarded decision.

Besides all the annoying "do you want to go back to your base now?" -popups
>>
>>330052104
yes

learn and have fun on rookie to start off
>>
>>330055740
I'm used to darkest dungeon, I'll do ironman whatever is above rookie.
>>
i just uninstalled because of bullshit scripted stuff happening.

i mean it was bad on the previous one, but this one is horriible
>>
>>330050931
>How's the long war mod coming?
There is not and never will be a long war mod, the long war team is making their own game that will probably be as shitty and autistic as long war was
>>
>>330053009
is this bait?
>>
I still haven't beaten it because I'm basically fucked in my campaign and I really don't want to restart.

Fun game, but goddamn does it throw a ton of bullshit at you constantly, but that's just XCOM.

I'll play it when it gets mechs and some real power armor.
>>
>>330052104
I'd wait for a sale and pick up Enemy Within bundled with everything for 10 dollars. 60 bucks is kind of an expensive buy-in to a series you've never played before. By the time you've had your fill of EW, maybe they'll have patched some of XCOM2's bugs and the price will be lower.
>>
>>330050931
If you enjoyed XCOM EU, EW, & LW, you'd probably get your money's worth out of XCOM 2 now, but it is buggy and you might want to give more time for mods to develop if that's your thing.
>>
>>330055886
What exactly do you mean by 'bullshit scripted stuff'? Examples?
>>
>>330050931
They managed to make the meta ridiculously simple on higher difficulties. Some classes are still out-and-out better than others. So there's still a "right" way to play which is kind of sad, but it's pretty similar to the last game in this respect.

It has some extra TECHNOLOGY which is nice but also pretty much every mission has a turn limit now. This one is definitely more forced action compared to the drawn-out cheese of the last game. That's the main difference between the two. Personally I preferred the longer engagements to runnanangunnan, but even XCOM:EU was pretty bad for that.

Since it's so heavily scripted, your mileage may vary. Any non-standard genre for a big budget release is always good, but as a strategy game it's sort of average or maybe even a little worse than average.
>>
I saw part of an LP of it and it looked really interesting I have never played an X-Com before. I never make 60 dollars purchases but I am tempted. I traded for a copy of X-Com Enemy Within but I never played it because everyone looking like a space marine turned me off.
>>
>>330056586
Probably means shit like bradford screaming and crying for half an hour every turn in terror missions which stops you from being able to do anything
>>
>>330050931
I love the game. The modding only gets better. But alot of people are horrible and bleed from their anus.
>>
How's it compared to UFO Defense?
>>
>>330050931
>How's the long war mod coming?
You mean those talentless hacks we dont need now actual good and balanced modders exist for Xcom?
>>
>>330055932

Probably but Terror from the Deep is at least a learning experience.
>>
>>330056001

Fair question, I personally thought XCOM without Long War mod was unplayable.

I mean, four person squads? In X-COM?
>>
>>330050931
Yes but wait for sale, so more mods and more patch can iron it's flaws out.
>>
>>330057191
It's 6.
>In X-COM?
It's not the same game as UFO defence, and if you think Long War makes nu-xcom into UFO defence you're mistaken.
>>
>>330056735
Fuck, that shit gets annoying. Any time an avatar progress happens, any time a civ dies, any time it gets near countdown.
>>
>>330057191
Fuck off xeno, you clearly aren't from earth if you think XCOM had 4-person squad caps.
>>
>>330056735
If he means that shit, there's like 500 mods that shut him up, and also get rid of other minor annoyances.
>>
>>330050931
I'm hoping some people get together, I wish I was someone that could help, and instead of making an XCOM 2: Long War they instead try to make it more like the original game. At least in some respects. Mainly the idea of large squads in hard fights where coming out with a pile of dead soldiers is okay.

In XCOM 2012, XCOM 2 and XCOM: Long War, it really wasn't okay to lose troops in any amount.

Someone's got a mod that starts most missions with every group of aliens on the map being active and coming after you. Give me 12 soldiers that are easily replaced and I'm set.
>>
>>330057191
It's XCOM, not X-Com.
If you want multiple squads with a higher limit, go play OpenXcom.
>>
>>330057476
Not him, and I mostly agree with you, but there is something to be said for a game to not need mods to stop being shitty. Plus how the fuck was it so unoptimized when it is PC exclusive, you would think they would have more manpower to focus solely on making it not run like hot garbage without diverting resources to a port team.
>>
>>330057304
>>330057371
>>330057556

I know you start out with 4 and it increases to 6, it just felt wrong running around with so few people. I played it again with Long War and it was more enjoyable but yes, it wasn't UFO Defense.

I mean, you're the organization to save the fucking planet against the aliens, you can't send more than four people?

I enjoyed it better when rookies were dying left and right in droves
>>
>>330057812
Fuck head yelling at you in terror missions and stuff is annoying, but it's a bit of a stretch to say that alone makes the game shitty. The performance stuff is pretty bad though, luckily for me turning AA off completely fixed all FPS issues I was having
>>
>>330058014
You are also a rebel group who has barely any support (at first). But yeah, larger squads would be sweet.
>>
>>330058014
>game that is not UFO defense is not UFO defense
what a fucking surprise.

Sending swarms of soldiers in 2 would make even less sense in a game where concealment and precise attacks are emphasized. And even then, you get the defense missions.
>>
XCOM 2 is really good and also really buggy.

If you weren't hype enough to preorder it, then you'll be good waiting for a sale. It'll have more mods and hopefully some patches by then.

It is again, really good and a big improvement on the original in every way. The mod tools, while fucked up in some ways (look up how to add sounds to weapons, it's hilariously stupid) are powerful enough to allow for TCs.
>>
>>330058014
Realism aside, it makes for a more balanced game since soldiers can get incredibly op in the end
>>
>>330058395
>Sending swarms of soldiers in 2 would make even less sense in a game where concealment and precise attacks are emphasized.

You are aware guerrilla tactics usually has at least 2 groups of a dozen people.

4 man squads is still insanely small, that's not even an elite strike team, those usually have 10-15 men.
>>
>>330058606
>it makes for a more balanced game since soldiers can get incredibly unbalanced in the end
You're not even making sense anon.
>>
>>330058596
What bugs have people been experiencing? I've only had two and they were really minor.
>>
>>330058395
>>330058148

I was actually talking about XCOM1, not 2, I haven't played 2 yet.

>>330058606

Or they could make the ayys even more OP
>>
>>330058014
There's a mission in 2 where you control 10 of your soldiers. It was cool for that reason alone, but also a bit of a chore since that was a lot of guys to find cover for and move around, and eventually I was controlling the map so hard that drops were getting overwatched before they could move. Kind of made me respect the lower limit.
>>
>>330050931
Runs like shit but it's a massive improvement over EU/EW. Plenty of variety when it comes to developing your squads and taking on the enemies and plenty of mods already adding to the game in a sensible way. You'll get your moneys worth if you don't have an issue with the poor optimization.
>>
>>330058861

Lots of weird lag and animation bugs, particularly when stray shots or explosions/fire destroy buildings and cover.

Also being able to shoot/throw grenades and shoot through walls and stuff like that.

Some crashes, general FPS issues.

Greater squad sizes would fucking mindbreak the AI especially after augmentations and all the gear unlocks
>>
>>330059347
Anon, I think you might just be retarded.
>>
>>330059347
Greater squad sizes wouldn't even help in a lot of situations. Late game ayyys have autohit aoe abilities and sight lines are limited, so you'd just be clustering up more soldiers together to get hit with grenades and gatekeeper psi bullshit.

i hate bradford too but like they said, i modded it out.

i am back playing the previous one for now, maybe i try again when i have more patience
>>
Played it for a few hours but just went and started an Apocalypse game instead. It's at least a bit better than what I played of the initial reboot and the customization is nice but there's just so much stuff I don't like compared to tbs games in the past that it's somewhat annoying to play. Not to mention the performance problems.
>>
>>330059915
It's alright anon.

I mean If I was retarded like you I don't think I would have understood that overpowered abilities that make soldiers unbalanced as you said could just be altered or removed to make them actually balanced to compensate for larger groups, or that larger groups add their own challenges.
>>
>>330059932
You do know how RNG works, that it's seeded and reloading the game doesn't change that?
>>
>>330060181
I thought XCOM 2 didn't save the seed like that anymore, and reloading gave different results?
>>
Runs like ass

Still liked it enough to play through it four times in a row

Exquisite Timing is the most fun way to play the game
>>
>>330060181
i knew it was like that on the first one.

it would make sense
>>
amazing game , huge improvement over the first one but lots of casuals are hurting this game image and rating

>muhh op lancers
>muhhh op sectoids
>muhhhh turn limits
>>
>>330060281

Nah, it does. The thing is, even canceled actions eat a seed now, so you have to play EXACTLY the same way, like even with movement and menus and shit.
>>
>>330060281

Each action changes the seed so changing the order in which you do stuff changes the chances.

So if you had something like:

1: Guy shoots at Ayy (80% listed chance, actual roll is a miss)
2: Move another soldier

if you instead moved the soldier first, that 80% shot might hit.

If you shoot first, and then reload, you'll always miss.
>>
>>330060281
>>330060381
Almost certain 2 does the same thing
>>
>>330060432
>>330060438
Oh, I see. Thank you anons
>>
>>330052104

You might as well start with Enemy Unknown, since it'll provide some context to XCOM 2. It's not necessary - this isn't a story-based game by any stretch of the imagination - but it's a safer bet given its low price right now.

XCOM's genre has fallen out of favour nowadays, and there's a reason for that. It might not be your speed.
>>

RNG is seeded to prevent savescuming. You can't test the RNG like that.
