N64 emulators were generally optimized for that game first because of the above.
As one of the earliest 3-d games, it's full of bugs and other quirks to find and discover. But it's also a good game on top of that (Maybe Bubsy 3D has similar potential, but no one except ulillilia cares because it sucks)
