Even with its disappointing story & characters, slapdash writing & shitty Sawano soundtrack, XCX is still the best JRPG of 2015 by a country mile.
You have to admire Monolith Soft for being ambitious & determined & not taking the easy route & sticking to the tried & true (looking at you Tales of)
Name another JRPG dev who has the determination & ambition to craft a JRPG that boasts a gigantic seamless open world, extensive character build customisation, giant rideable mechs, and a whole other marriage of gameplay systems. XCX is easily one of the best RPGs of 2015.
And the next Xeno- will again be one of, if not the best, RPGs.

my only real gripe with this game has to be just how hard the power spike shifts going into chapter 8. that, and the agonizing fetch quests that you could end up trapped in.

Guess you didn't pay very close attention
The Prog Ares is based on Elma's original skell, also called the Ares, but her's was apparently piloted in tandem. Vandham says as much at the end of chapter 6.
And since it turns out that she is SPOILER ALERT an alien, then the Prog Ares/Ares 70/Ares 90 looks different because it's based on alien tech.
