FF6 is not FF3, you burgertard. FF3 is pretty bad. Certainly better than 2 and probably better than 1, but it's still very low on the series' ranking.

I guess there's usually a tendency with trilogies in that the first is ambitious but isn't really polished, the second is both ambitious and polished as it improves upon its mistakes from the first and the third is polished but not very ambitious because by that point it's found its comfort zone. But again there are exceptions; it just so happens that a lot of trilogies in all media follow that structure.

Mostly because a lot of people started realizing just how bad and lazy the game are.
Maybe they realized the incompetence of Game Freak.
Other than that, people started to realize how much nostalgia-driven the whole franchise really is. Maybe they started questioning their choice of burning 50€ each year into a franchise that has really little to offer in terms of substance, unless you are a kid or an actual competitive player.
Maybe they started to realize just how technically obsolete the games really are for their time. Maybe they started to realize how much more some games from the same genre have to offer compared to Pokémon. Maybe they started to realize how little they try to be innovative. Maybe they started to realize how much milked the franchise really is, comparing it to the always hated AAA overly-milked western releases.
Maybe they aren't kids anymore.
