The problem with mother 3 is that it didn't have the weirdness, ambiguity and unreal feeling of Earthbound.

My personally biggest gripe with Mother 3 was that the tone was all over the place and the game felt like it wasn't sure if it was supposed to be comedic or tragic.
Earthbound started off comedic, but got more serious towards the end.
Mother 3 has moments like Hinawa's death, where it's delivered in such a weird way that I wasn't sure if I was supposed to laugh or feel bad. Then you got Hinawa's dad talking like a fag on purpose the very next day after his daughter died.
