Wait I don't get the meme, do people think RE4 was hard?
>>
>>329110035
That's why I called him a casual.
>>
>>329110035
RE4 is a game that never actually sold all that well. It's a niche game with a niche fanbase that has managed to deluse themselves and others into thinking Resident Evil 4 was a big hit. A vast majority of people who did buy RE4 never finished it. It has like a 23% completion rate. So the idea that most people probably never played past the "survival horror" village section probably has some truth to it.
>>
I wasn't a fan of RE4. I don't like being railroaded through set pieces like that.
>>
RE4 was the game that killed the series.
>>
>>329110257
>I have absolutely no data to support this claim when in fact the game was so successful that it was ported to basically every console since it released
Get outta here dumbass.
>>
>>329109810
Are there any news to be excited about?
>>
>>329110257
>niche

The game was released on the following platforms.

Gamecube
PS2
PC
Wii
PS3
360
Android
iPhone
PC (again)

And now, it's getting a PS4 and XB1 port as well.

You're an idiot.

No, it breathed new life into it. It kept the tank controls somewhat, and had a narrow camera angle, but later releases went full retard into TPS territory.
>>
>>329110385
We have the sales data for RE4, anon, thanks to Capcom. The PS2 version of RE4 sold 2.3 million copies. It sold worse than Operation Raccoon City, a game that was so unsuccessful it killed the developer.

>>329110509
None of RE4's individual versions were big sellers. I don't know why RE4 fans are so deeply in denial about this. GC sold poorly, PS2 sold poorly, Wii sold poorly, PS3/360/PC HD sold so poorly they literally didn't chart for Capcom.

I dunno why RE4 fans are so deeply in denial about the fact RE4 was released on 9 different platforms and still couldn't sell as well as RE5/RE6/RE2, etc.
>>
>>329110257

Baffling post.
>>
>>329110562
20th Anniversary is on March 22. If we're lucky, we'll get an RE7 trailer then.

>>329110720
RE4 sold worse than RE3. It was stuck in a limbo between failures like CV and Remake and truly popular games like RE2.

Then RE5 came along and Resident Evil actually started selling again. RE6 continued the trend. If those games could outsell the previous games with a single release, there's no reason to think the PS4/XBO ports won't sell insanely well, too.
>>
>>329109810
No one.
>>
>>329110864
>RE4 is a bad game because I think it sold bad
>>
>>329110771
tl;dr version:
Resident Evil 4 is a game where people buy five copies of the exact same game, and then try to convince themselves that the game was a huge success that everybody liked. The PS2 version wasn't a hit. The GC version wasn't a hit. The Wii version wasn't a hit. These versions were barely setting better than REMAKE, a game that almost killed the series.

>>329110936
It didn't sell badly. It sold mediocre numbers. RE4 fans are so delusional they think RE4 has been re-released over and over again because it's popular. The reason it gets re-released over and over again is because there is a small niche of 1-2 million people who will buy the exact same game repeatedly. That's why no single version of RE4 ever sold huge numbers.

Meanwhile, stuff like RE5 and RE6 sells 7 or so million copies without much effort. Single release window for the most part. No whoring the game out for a decade.
>>
>>329111190
If you mongoloids keep giving this retard attention, I'm not going to be your friend anymore.

>pretending you played a game

>>
>>329111352

You're retarded. If you played the game, you played the game. Playing a game != beating the game. They are two separate things.

>>
>>329111584

Only 1/4 people ever finished a classic Resident Evil game. REMAKE has like 20% completion, IIRC. Interestingly, despite complaints that RE6 was too long, it has a much higher completion rate.

You're missing the point quite badly, anon. Resident Evil was a series with established expectations for sales numbers set by RE2 which sold around 5 million or so.
>>
>>329111773
>He's right, back then no one expected COD tier sales. Even 1 million sales was considered a good success and a guaranteed sequel.
REMAKE and RE0 selling around 1.5 million copies each was so catastrophic that Capcom abandoned survival horror and pushed Resident Evil into the anction genre. 1 million sales was not good. Not good at all.
>>
>>329110257
>Never actually sold well

1.6 million

500,000

http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/business/million.html

That's about 5.9 confirmed million (6.4 if we include Steam). If we had PS3 and X360 numbers I wouldn't be surprised if it surpassed RE5 (PC, PS3, 360) 's 7 million.

Which would make it the best selling RE title in the series.
>>
>>329111645
>Only 1/4 people ever finished a classic Resident Evil game. REMAKE has like 20% completion, IIRC.

And what's your citation for these statistics? Your ass, right?

Ah, I see. This was just a bait thread to get people talking about RE6, wasn't it? In that case, why wouldn't you just make it that in the first place?
>>
>>329111878

Capcom were also massive fucking kikes at the time and we going off expectations of previous big sellers. Most companies at the time were happy with 1 million sales for their games.

That's the problem right there. Basing potential sales on a game that was made seven years prior, on an older console, in a completely different market environment is fucking stupid.

>>
>>329111783
MGS 3's sales were significantly lower than MGS2's. Around 3 million, I think. I was actually quite shocked when I found out. The way people talk, you'd think MGS 3 had been on equal footing with previous games in the series.
>>
>>329111878
>REMAKE and RE0 selling around 1.5 million copies each was so catastrophic that Capcom abandoned survival horror
REMAKE and RE0 selling around 1.5 million caused Capcom to ditch the Gamecube for the PS2, which, as proven with RE4, sold almost double, even with a pretty late, subpar port.

Capcom even said as much with the announcement of RE4's PS2 port: changing markets and increased profit potential.
>>
>>329112017
And what about every version of the games specified that didn't have achievements/trophies? This is why there can never be any accurate statistics for these things.
>>
>>329109810

I remember when it first came out, I was like 13 years old, and spent all of my time at a local game store.

It was super chill, with a few old TV's set up for PS2 Xbox and Gamecube games

You were supposed to pay to play, but I was around so often they just let me play for free.

The owner actually let me take home a gamecube and RE4 because I thought it was so amazing.

RIP Gameboyz. Paul, if you're out there, you were too good to me.
>>
4 is the most overrated game of all time and I liked it
>>
>>329112124
Only because it's an old game though
For most 7th gen and up games it's doable
>>
ITT: all this dancing around to avoid the simple fact that Resident Evil 4 sold significantly worse than the previous mainline entries, and the multiple re-releases were Capcom's way of milking the niche fanbase dry.
>>
>>329112075
>MGS 3's sales were significantly lower than MGS2's.

Why is this thread suddenly about sales? Please explain it to me. The person you were replying to never even brought that game's sales into the discussion. I don't understand why you're doing this.
>>
>>329112186
>4 is the most overrated game of all time

You mean OoT.
>>
>>329112290
Because OP image meme.

Let's go back in time to 2006. To when RE4 PS2 had sold worse than Operation fucking Raccoon City. Do you think Resident Evil 4 fans were going to admit their beloved game was no longer top dog? No, of course not. Resident Evil's core fanbase has always been a wee bit retarded. They're often convinced that making games like REMAKE is a viable option despite those sort of games being even less popular in 2016 than in 2002.
>>
>>329112776
>Let's go back in time to 2006 and talk some more about sales numbers

Let's not.
>>
>>329111878
The games were always action games. Resident Evil 2 was ALWAYS considered an action game by Kamiya and Mikami. Mikami also considers Resident Evil 4 to be an action game.
>>
>>329112290
>The person you were replying to never even brought that game's sales into the discussion. I don't understand why you're doing this.
MGS3 sold far worse than MGS2. Ergo, if people claim they played both MGS2 and MGS3, there's a good chance some of them are lying.
>>
This is a strange thread.
>>
>>329113006
This is what happens when some of /vg/ leaks out into /v/. This is why we need a Resident Evil general to contain it.
>>

i... i cant believe a person wrote this and continued to reply to posts in such a 'im serious manner'
>>

Good story. It's nice to see adults treating children well. I have similar stories.
I'm actually happy to get the new Resident Evil 6. I really wanted to play the Ustanak mode, but it was XBOX exclusive forever. By the time it hit ps3 the online scene was fucking dead.
>>
>>329112776
The digital games are easy money for Capcom. Their sales directly fund the Osaka unit. The team responsible for making the numbered sequels to the franchise.
>>
>>329113006
Only the dead may know peace from this fun.

What are the best versions of RE1, 2 and 3 I can get? Should I just pick up PC one or, dunno, PC versions have troubles running in windowed mode+no widescreen options on top of compatibility issues so I'm better off emulating them?

Emulate the PS1 versions of those games. Don't bother with the PC ports.

>>
>>329113843

>Emulate PS1

No this is bad advice. If you are gonna go the emulation route, emulate the Gamecube ports of RE2 and RE3. The GC was IIRC slightly higher res or at least the background where cleaned up, better FMV quality and also Dolphin is a better emulator.

RE1 yeah emulate the PS1 version though since that was fully remade on GC and it's completely different. Get the PC version of that now.
>>
>>329113882
I've had PS1 but I don't anymore(why even bother? Emulation is close to perfect at this point).
>>
>>329112075
Probably because not a lot of people suffered through MGS 2.

I even prefer Revelations to it
>>

I guess you must mean RE6 (which still has great controls but people hate them anyway because they don't understand them and they aren't "tankey") because RE5 had only slightly tweaked/improved controls of RE4.
>>
>>329110035
The controls were really off putting the first time I played it but I wouldn't call it hard, it just takes some getting used too. Still, it was a lot of fun.
>>
>>329111892
Capcom officially counted all those platforms and RE4 sales and it still didnt' sell more than RE5 PS3 and 360 edition.
>>
>>329119543
6 had solid controls but shit everything else.
>>
>>329121129

6 has the best Mercs.
