Installing a mod chip was piss easy. My mom installed one on our ps1 when I was a kid so we didnt have to pay for new games. Just rented a bunch then burned them.
There was also the diskswap method which worked without alterations. Worked on both the ps1 and the ps2 slim.
Can't really blame the dreamcasts failure on piracy. I'd blame it more on a poor marketing campaign, and releasing between generations. It didn't have very many games either, though the ones it did have were pretty good. There were a lot of factors in its failure.

Anyone else occasionally get a blackscreen that then has weird colored lines fade in and requires a hard shutdown to fix? I understand that booting into CFWs on startup did/does have issues with boot rates but I'm just wondering if it's typical to get a failed boot roughly 1/15 times. On 9.2.0.20U emunand with the last official rxtools nightly build from roxas's github, not the current nightlies.

You might be using the "safe" sysUpdater that hardly worked, use the tusxsh or julian build if you aren't already. Also, you'll improve your chances to also boot into homebrew with menuhax opposed to browserhax. Another thing to try would to place the sysdupdater .3dsx in root and renamed as boot.3dsx so it boots with menuhax instead of going into homebrew first.

Yes, was it SMT IV? Mine corrupted files for no reason, then my emuNAND would yellow screen on boot up every time. Reinstalled emuNAND and things were going smoothly until suddenly no game could be launched, I was met with errors every time. Now I've fixed my emuNAND again and so far so good. I don't know why it keeps breaking, but if it happens again I may just give up. I don't want to keep restarting my games.
