The monster hunter games have really tough encounters that would be easier in a party, but they arent MMO multiplayer. Its a good option but youll need to know a group of players or other friends with the game.

Nogi was the very first MMO I truly fell in love with. Played it since the japanese G1. Can't handle grinding and commitment anymore so I stopped playing years ago, but I still think it's the freshest MMO ever made.

See anon, Mabi isn't modern, it's outdated, due to the old as fuck engine and shitty graphics, the game itself has excellent systems, the combat actually requires you to learn how it works, the way you unlock skills, rebirths, classes, exploration etc, it's great, but it's all brought down by the engine that's alggy and unresponsive and the ugly(by today standarts) graphics, if these things could get fixed, it would be great

Seems like some kind of SMT/pokemon combat in a sandbox MMO. Player made towns and stuff. One video I saw had some kind of scripting engine so you can turn your player house into a dungeon full of traps and junk.
But it probably won't be. I was really excited for Tree of Savior and it was kind of junk, but there was potential there. Potential all sucked away when the korean open beta packed it to the gills with cash shop advantages. Like without paying it takes 2 whole days to get your money/items from using the auction house.

The only really tough MMO I played was Wizardry Online. You really needed a party to make progress, especially in the later areas when permadeath and pvp was actually a threat. But it wasn't a good game. You had to spend hours creating your character trying to get the maximum of 21 bonus stat points and even then you had a chance to permanently lose stats every time you leveled up.

So it's safe to assume that the MMORPG genre is basically dead? More and more people seem to want to play singleplayer RPGs rather than play with other people. My only question is "Why?" WoW is the easy answer, but there must have been something else that helped ruin the genre.

This is true, the only game I've ever played that it was literally mechanically improbable for you to be able to solo at all(excepting from levels 1-10ish, and Beastmasters and maybe Puppetmasters).

Mabi is a decent game, but it's ruined by horrible design choices and fucking Nexon. The only thing I actually liked was the combat, but it's buggy and needlessly hard.

The answer is that MMOs got less niche. WoW is of course a major part of that, but so was the dawn of F2P MMOs flooding the market. Games like Maplestory, for example. Free to play, so everyone and their grandma has access and exposure to them. A simple game where you sit on a single map for hours and can grind on your own, extremely low commitment rates, you can play and quite whenever you feel.

I played ARR for a few months and liked it up until recently, actually. The game would have been a lot better if they expanded horizontally instead of adding even more tiers of levels, content, etc. to bury the old stuff under. Introducing more leveling dungeons would also have been great since doing the same dungeon for every 4 or 5 levels gets repetitive and boring when leveling extra jobs. I don't see the game going where I want it to, so it's not worth my sub fee for longer than a month when expansion packs come out.

I think this is pretty much the last mmo I truly enjoyed.
I had a little group of other 3/4 people, they were younger I could tell but they were quite friendly and fun, I remember we used to do dungeons and quests for the plot and then hanged in the city playing songs and fooling with other random people
I had a character with a fro and people thought it was hilarious
I lagged a lot, I often couldn't decently do combos because of the lag but I still played for months

A lot of what made it great, the community, is kind of gone, but it's still kind of fun with the computer-controlled party member system. There are still people in cities, but it's rare seeing them out in the wild leveling stuff, and it's even rarer finding people that want to group for leveling content.

It really depends, if you'd have an active social group of friends to play with then go for it. If you're going to be soloing everything (which you pretty much can) and twiddling your thumbs, don't bother it gets boring really fast.

pre wotlk WoW sounds like your game. Its the only thing I can think of, off the top of my head, that offered that experience on a regular basis. The only recent MMO that I've played was TESO, and that game is/was piss easy for most encounters, bar maybe the dungeons and delves that weren't mandatory.
