So, to anyone that's played Dragon's Dogma: Have you figured out how to overcome the sense of.... "What the hell is going on, and why do I care?"

Not that I DISLIKE the game, but it feels.. Just kind of bland after a few hours in.
>>
As someone who has hundreds of hours in it,the one thing I'll say is that the pacing is a bit off in the main campaign. It can feel dry during segments. If you keep playing and get into the endgame DLC, you WONT be disappointed.
>>
>>324284098
That's kind of what I was thinking... I just feel like everything is so quiet and empty, naw'm sayin'?

Felt the same way at the beginning, didn't care much about anyone except maybe Mercedes and Madeline for fap value
The dialogue felt kinda uninteresting and before i noticed it i started skipping the text on the side quests

But then i did arousing suspicion

>>324283901
Wait until you kill Gregor, it will really start to feel dead then. Barely any quests, nothing ever changes. Just more dangerous monsters lurking around the world and harpies everywhere in the sky. The only thing left for you is to literally crawl into a hole and die.

The gameplay gets good as hell then, but damn if it doesn't feel aimless.

Not a bad thing to feel. Plenty of Arisen, like Barroch, have taken that stance.

>Barroch: “To look at you, I wager you’ve seen it. Aye? Had your tussle with the dragon, then espied the grand scheme of the world. How it’s built. Then you’ll know the wisdom of leaving it all be. Have you ever had cause to miss your heart? Steer clear of cliffs and beasts beyond your means and you can live forever. If wandering the countryside has lost its charm, take up residence here. I’d welcome a drinking partner.”

Why is this game so full of excuses for almost every aspect of it? And then I hear combat is good but I see webms of the same attacks like slamming monsters in the head or jumping on them. Then I hear some classes are just shit anyway. Then I hear everything between combat is shit. Then I hear people scream about their gimmicks of being a loli or having a team of amazon warriors but then the pawn system is disappointing.

I still think it's a good game and when i'll get a bit of time i'll finish it, but i feel it could have been more
>>
>>324286206

>And bandits.

Are the shield bandits broken?

They seem to take a shitload of damage to die (when compared to the scrubs they are with) and can stunlock you to death in couple a seconds. It just seems that the regular bandits and bandit mages are like lvl5-10 mobs and the shield bandits are something like lvl30.
>>
>>324287560
Nah, what you want to do is play defensively until your pawn either kills them or the bandit turns their attention on your pawn. Once they do, run up from behind and grapple them. Your pawns will then wail on the bandit with impunity and they'll take a lot of damage if nothing else.
>>
>>324287560
Defense is subtractive. Haven't noticed shield guys being too hard, but the twohander guys have some serious stagger resistance.
>>
>>324287319
Played the demo, didn't like it and was told the demo isn't good. I hear shit like this all the time in DD threads. Or at least the old ones before the PC port. Oh, the quests are boring but that's fine. Oh, the pawns are annoying and barebones npcs but that's fine. Oh, some classes are senseless, useless shit but that's fine. Oh, the story is garbage for most of the game but that's fine.
>>
>>324287739
How do you grapple in a full nelson like the pawns do sometime?
If i try grabbing them i just hold them on the shoulder and they don't take damage
>>
>>324284098

>>
>>324283901
You only play DD for the combat, not the story, anon. Combat, combat, combat.
>>
>>324287739

Two shield bandits can easily wipe my pawns (~lvl15, balanced group), especially if there are any other mobs around.
>>
>>324288065

Not OP but the combat is not that good.

Sure, it's better than Skyrim but still not nearly as good as Dark Souls.
>>
>>324287863
The game has some flaws for sure. Its basically how dark souls is super shit after O&S, except in reverse. The beginning is super rough, but it really grows on you once your character gets stronger. The story especially picks up in the latter stages of the game. Every class is fine, pawns are really endearing and quite literally learn from you and some quests are indeed boring and shit. This game was never more than a cult classic 7/10, but its really fun.
>>
>>324288223
>but still not nearly as good as Dark Souls.
Absolutely disgusting. You enjoy sitting there stunlocking things and rolling away when you can't. Literally Dark Souls combat in a nutshell. There is no close combat variety unless you go mage despite all the movesets of the different weapons.

there's nothing else needed in a game other then good gameplay to keep me interested. If you need good story and characterization or anything else to keep yourself interested in a video game, I don't think video games are for you

>mfw I see a steam review saying (not about dragon's dogma) "this game has excelent combat and customization and the enemies are very fun to fight. 5/10 because art style is bland and thus I can't make myself care for the game"
fuck you you fucking faggot

>>
>>324287863
>Oh, the pawns are annoying and barebones npcs but that's fine.
>pawns
>boring

Yeah, no.
I have a warrior pawn trained so well that she only picks up the items I actually want, ignoring all the worthless herbs and basic enemy drops. Shes a certified dragon slayer and can kite a drake all by herself. On top of it all her bestiary knowledge is so damn complete that her battle strategy perfectly complements me playing as Ranger. If I'm shooting at things from far away she'll exclusively engage weaker enemies with her abilities, but if I'm up close using my daggers she'll constantly grapple enemies and hold them so I can finish them off.

Pawns are totally unparalleled in terms of AI controlled party members in any other game out there. Spend enough time with them and they become certifiable expert mercenaries that lay waste to anything on the fucking continent in style.
>>
>>324283901
Story is trash, even fans agree. Just make up your own adventure and stop caring about the characters etc., much more fun that way.
>>
Each player can summon two other people's pawns. You would think this would mean everyone get's their pawn summoned to some degree. So why is it every pawn i see from other players is unrated(including my own). Are people just not summoning pawns? Are they using default ones like rook?
>>

I wish the combat was faster and with more chain attacks like combinations of light and heavy like many games do
6 skills or even just 3 for warrior are not enough

Most class can't dodge, so the combat feels clunky and repetitive
Blocking is kinda cool, but fighting small monsters feels like a chore

Climbing the big monsters is nice but i was disappointed that you can just spam the light attack

>Oh really? Not saying you're wrong, just that most DD fans in the daily DD threads a year ago seemed to fail to mention any of that.

Here's the thing though
to train your pawn, you have to actually train it. Get in the same class as it, show it how to use skills.

Most people pick a class different then their pawn, teaching it bad behavior. It's the entire reason so many people think that the pawns are shit, they don't bother actually training it.

Mind you, it doesn't take a lot of effort to train a pawn, just get in the same class as them and play for a bit, but most people don't even bother doing that.

Is there any good loot in the loot chests or as drops?

I'm just being honest anon, this is by no means a 10/10 game. Every game has it's flaws, at the very least criticising a game you like is better than only telling people "It's GOTY" or "It's revolutionary".

It's still one of my favourite games, I'm just not going to ignore it's flaws because it's convenient.
>>
>>324283901
>"i want a game to hold my hand though everything"
>>
OP here. Just re-made my character to something I like much more (missed the detailed character creation at the beginning because I just didn't look, oops). I'll admit, it's a lot more interesting with a character you enjoy looking at.
>>
>>324289214
If you're the same vocation as the pawn they'll pattern your combat style and adapt to it along with the rest of the pawns in your squad, but for everything outside of combat vocation doesn't matter.
There are tons of super tiny details that pawns will pick up on and copy. If you stop in the middle of an open forest or field your pawns will either stand in place around your general vicinity, facing in different directions to keep watch, or they'll mingle about and pick up any curatives in the area. They encompass a fairly substantial radius around you and search for everything in it on their own if you don't restrict them. How you employ the three basic battle commands influences that. Just one of those little hidden details.
>>
>>324283901
Only in the end it starts to make sense.

You just do it, that's the point of the Arisen
>>
>>324289492
No problem with criticizing a game you like it. But apparently a lot of DDfags didn't know how to play their own game like >>324289214 pointed out. Between repetitive jumping atop monsters, WOLVES, complaints about small skill sets, people saying certain classes are unplayable or just terrible in the long run, the same old attacks being worshiped as examples of why the combat is amazing, the terrible questlines, and a suck ass demo which also apparently isn't good, the game doesn't feel worth even the $30 risk. Hell, it doesn't even feel like picking up again at all. I'll likely just pirate it first. $30 ain't bad but it's certainly not worth dropping on a game it's own fanbase has managed to make sound terrible.

I'm glad people managed to convince me it might not that bad, at least.

>the pacing is sometimes dry
>THAT MEANS THE GAME ISN'T GOOD
Come on anon, reading comprehension
>>
The main campaign is mostly shit and only really kicks in towards the very end, though there are some great, actually plot relevant side quests if you end up getting them. Also, even though the game is open world it's mostly empty and actually discourages free exploration due to most areas being locked until you get the quest to actually go there (f.ex. the griffin tower, at least two strongholds, you can't complete the water dungeon because the cyclops with the key doesn't spawn, you can't even enter the main city before you get the head escort quest even if you use the secret passage etc.) not to mention the game periodically locks certain side quest-lines if you go too far in the main quest without any proper reason, plus it's extremely easy to accidentally overlevel the vanilla game if you don't just stick to the main quest.

The expansion area is much better since it does away with the empty open world and focuses entirely on combat, good encounters, memorable boss fights and dungeon crawlan without any padding in the middle.

Jumping atop monsters is optional, but fun.

WOLVES HUNT IN PACKS! is a meme, but yes the pawns say it (or a variation) everytime a wolf appears.

There is actually quite a bit of variety in skills.

Every class is playable, although obviously some are a little better.

Fair point, people do seem to post the same magic Webm and use the same skills in videos.

It's really only the sidequests that are terrible, but they're entirely optional.

The demo was the sole reason I bought this game, it's not that bad.

This game might not be for you. By all means pirate it first and give it a try.If you like it consider buying it, if not then no harm done.

Half of the world population are autists willing to do your bidding and someone gave them sharp objects to play with. Probably due to some substance spread by the wind.

I'm more interested in why /v/ touted this game's magic system as anything special; it's just your run of the mill PEW PEW PEW coupled with charge charge charge then pew pew pew again. Just because it has some nice animations doesn't mean it's good. Arx Fatalis shits all over it. I think I'm gonna switch to mystic knight.

Yeah, it's all pretty basic if you think about it, but it's nice and comfy. Apart from that damn spooky nights when wolves and goblins come out in droves. For stat growth? Start playing MA whenever you want. Min-maxing is only important if you plan on farming the online version of Ur-Dragon for the holy weapons that are instantly outclassed by first expansion area gear.

The augments are really useful though. Max mage vocation level (meaning not you character's actual level) nets you an augment that increases magical damage by +10%, whereas max sorcerer nets you +20% magic dmg that stacks with mage's augment and another augment that speeds up spell casting speed (affects MA's bow abilities) by 15%.

After Barroch said 'nah, fuck that, imma chill on this gothic island', the dragon had to go out and find/create another Arisen. Barroch ended up watching what happened to that one.

She failed and became the Dragon, then chose her lover (when she was mortal) as the next Arisen, and he refused to choose between slaying her and sacrificing her since she was his 'beloved'. In response, the Dragon cursed him to become Daimon

Barroch has seen some shit man.
>>
>>324291924
Arisen isn't a mystical "once in a millennia" sort of position. Duke Edmun is publicly well known as an Arisen. When you do your history, you start to notice patterns. Not only that but you aren't the first Arisen he's met at Bitterblack, nor was he the first. He's just the current record holder for most time spent there.

>"You're far from the first new face I've come across here. Most come bearing invitations, but I've turned the lot of them down. No common cause. They fight to be quit of this place, while I find it rather cozy so I send them off with a bit of advice - worry less and enjoy more. The fact that I haven't seen any of them again means either they got their wish, or got dead. Either way, I'll not hold my breath for a reunion."

>“I wasn’t the first to come here. It was a colorful cast already when I arrived. An old man, half-dead by the time I met him. The other half didn’t take long. The other was a woman. Ahh, she’d had been a real gem, save that over-serious nature. By the end, she treated me with the same contempt she would a beast. Had she been freer with her charms around "beasts", she might not have wound up serving as their…supper. Still, a shame… It’s simple luck that I’ve survived this long. I’ve no illusions on that count.”

It's a pretty safe bet that even if he didn't figure it out in his own world, he's been able to piece shit together from Arisen who have found out about "the grand scheme of the world."

There's no evidence to suggest Grette was from the same world as Barroch's. Not only that, but there was no romance between her and Ashe. It was strictly paternal except maybe with some one sided shit on Ashe's part.

Ashe fell in love with Grette's pawn Olra, which is where the choice came in. Ashe had figured out who the new dragon was so he realized it was either kill his adopted mum or sacrifice his waifu. He understandably got pissed and railed agains the whole system, swearing to destroy it. Grette went "k" and monkey paw'd him, giving him the power to destroy the cycle, but trapping him on Bitterblack where the most he could do is be a nasty rash.

>not looking up what shadowfort was beforehand.

I'm not gonna pretend that the quest wasn't hard as balls and that fighting through the hobgoblin forest at night wasn't hell, but when a ranking knight asks for your help escorting her to a place with a name like shadowfort you gotta know something is up.

Also
>not saving

You were just asking for it.

that quest is actually loads of fun if you can deal with frustration. Trekking from area to area going through different terrain types fighting different varieties of enemies, having different routes you could take to get to your goal, ending in a hard as fuck bossfight, all of that was more than enough to make up for what a kick in the balls the difficulty was. It was easily more fulfilling than 90% of the story quests in any RPG I've played in the past 5 years. They probably shouldn't have given it to you so early though.

The only reason I even knew Dragon's Dogma existed is from threads on /v/. Though I never looked at any of them because I didn't own a PS3 so I had no interest in it. I bought it on a whim, and I've been having a fucking blast. I'd say whatever praise it received was likely well deserved. Put the time in to make your pawns a competent unit and you're guaranteed to enjoy it. All the little nuances of the AI really make for interesting gameplay at the very least. I've got a giant hulk sorcerer who will pick up and throw enemies when they get too close to him. Because hes so tall and muscular his endurance is higher than the rest of the party so I use him as a pack mule. Nothing beats muscle magic, anon. Nothing.

What are you even putting on your dude when you were m-knight? I have a hobbitish arisen and my normal m-knight gear leaves me around at least 5 weight to play around with(about 15-17 weight). I mean granted thats not a lot, but thats why I have amazon/meatshield/packmule pawn to carry stuff I don't need. Also have you joined the group of m-archers whos solution for every enemy is to light themselves on fire and hump it to death? Its silly but effective and an oddly nice change of pace from the usual playstyle. Honestly M.knight/archer is pretty good at dealing with most anything the game throws at you. As for your question why not give assassin a go? Damage, Range, counters, climb-exclusive skill, and his passives are great once you want to go pawnless or speedrun

You probably shouldn't climb monsters in small spaces near edges. I climbed an ogre and the stupid fuck freaked out over seeing the loli mage pawn I had with me. He charged off the edge and we fell like 6 stories. Pretty sure the only reason I lived is I was on his face and he landed on his back

before you do the quest to retake shadow fort, and you have to have given ser berne something as a gift
>>
Quick question, for best graphics

max everything, disable fxaa and depth of field?
>>
>>324298969
Get a pawn from the rift to carry you through the easy parts.

Then uncurse some stuff to get really OP endgame item and repeat until you dont need said pawn.

>do a dungeon full of monster X
>back to the inn, rop that loot, learn skills etd.
>check out board
>kill fuckton of monster X quest
>>
>have to take recruits to the castle taken over by goblins.
>meet them outside gran soren.
>they are being attacked by goblins
>helping them when, suddenly, a griffon attacks and kills all the reinforcements
Is that supposed to happen? Either way, 10/10 timing
>>
Man playing with the KB/M feels so fucking weird to me, but only after playing with it for a little bit I find myself missing the hotkeys when I'm using my controller.
>>
>>324298969
I just came off the game after getting fucked by him, I have a ranger and a sorcerer pawn but they'd rather do fuck all than shoot him.
>>
Favorite pre-grigori armor sets, newfriends?

I rocked the Chimeric half plate for quite a while.
>>
>'Hey man some dude need you help all the way there'
>'Help them kk ?'
>I can see the fort's door
>Suddenly a fucking dragon blaze down the sky right on me

I TP'd the fuck out of that instantly.
>>
>>324299596
Tried using ranger pawns but never worked very well.
My main pawn is a sorcerer and she's pretty much doing all the damage.
But ya she does shit rarely so i just survive for a shiton of time until she decides to cast a spell.
>>
>>324283901
Dragon fucking took my heart. I don't need to care about the world or characters ro want revenge on that fucker. Also Mercedes is perfect
>>
>>324299890
That's a weird way to spell Quina.
>>
is anyone else not able to summon/see some of there friends pawns?
>>
>>324299890

Not to mention he just fucked up your home town on a whim. I think pretty much anyone would be pissed after that what happened.

Not sure if I'll ever get used to the lack of a target lock. Played fighter for 5-6 hours and I'm still missing quite a few times.
>>

Hero's surcoat is pretty stylish.
>>
>>324300430
I'm trying to look for dank kite shields and helmets as well as better knight gear that isn't too bulky

just met the duke and I'm pre gregori so item options are pretty empty right now
>>
>>324296415
Those are training quests, mate. Not meant as a main objective, but more of a bonus for when you're killing enemies around the world.

It's actually pretty smart, now that I think about it, it creates a non-intrusive way of bettering your character.

Well there actually is a reason for that but nobody cares about the story in this game.

Was Direwolf cloak in the original game? Don't remember using it on 360.
>>
>>324300973
Yeah.
>>
>>324300812

Well I mean you literally dont find out about that until during the fight. The story just comes flooding at you after that point.

want to play a magic archer whats the best way to min max them?

>on the way to bluemoon tower

pain in the ass to fight as strider
>>
Is there a way to tell how much more experience or whatever I need to rank up my vocation? I'm sitting here as a level 25 Strider, sick of it and wanting to play something else, but I'm one rank away from the maximum and getting the final augments.
>>
>>324301175

Assassin and sorc levels. You'll be kinda squishy with those, so if you wanna put some fighter in there for the defense you could do that. The first two are all about the damage.
