They balanced the game around it being a NG+ feature. It is beatable still but it was a pretty stupid idea to make it that way especially when you factor in the party system.
I find the game fun, but it is seriously flawed. Being built around parties for a game like this is a bad idea, it's like they made a game then made AI to play itself. The stagger system isn't very well made. Everything takes way too much time from traveling to wandering around town to item management. Even the fighting takes forever especially if you are not playing with pawns (I found one enemy in an easy area physically impossible to kill without pawns unless I came back later because I did 0 damage to it), how long can it fucking take to kill an undead enemy that isn't even fighting back? The AI is really wonky. Shit spawns right in front of your face. I will probably finish it, but it is a huge stretch to put it on the same level as certain other action rpgs.

I nabbed a decent one around level 20 for a bit but he had a really deep voice that drowned out everything in the game when he casted spells and sounding like a fucking demon speaking through a half eaten roadkilled dog
