I never found the commands too jarring. Sure, some of them could be better incorporated, but really what makes or breaks a game like this is the community. The server I played on consistently had 500-500 people at all times, with established factions and major players, which meant you were stepping into a fairly complex and functioning game world. It probably helped that there was no eed for account confirmation - RP was enforced during the game by mods and rules, instead of requiring you to spend a bunch of time making forum accounts and writing out character histories for approval.
