It's a completely mediocre game that doesn't deserve such extremes in attention.
It is clever and breaks the 4th wall in unique ways, sure. Story is neat, yeah. But the actual GAME part of this videogame? You have nothing to explore, items/equipment are barley important or even in the game, the fighting mechanic gets monotonous half way through (excluding a few nice boss battles) and it is short, which is good or bad depending on who you ask.
I can see why this resonates so much with people who probably prefer story over gameplay at least, but because I am not one of those people it seems like a completely average game to me. It's not bad enough to be worth hating on; it's just forgettable at worse.

Undertale was completely neutral to me. I'm not a furry or a moron, so it just felt like Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest with some idiotic hipster flavor.
The writing is alright, the design is pretty good but I think emotion played far too much into the critique of this game. People did insanely innovated shit ten years ago but nobody cared because hipsters hadn't regurgitated into gaming yet.

I've played Undertale twice, just trying to figure out why it's supposed to be good with no way to figure it out.

I commend the developer for doing it by himself but it's not very good.
Why does anyone give a shit about graphics in a game like this? It had a couple of cool looking scenes despite its stupid pixel direction that made me think the creator is probably a talented artist and the simplistic look is a choice. Either way, I really don't think it would have been necessary for them to invest the time and money making it look different. If you're not determined to hate it, the look has kind of a charm to it. I much prefer it to generic games with AAA graphics.

This fucking nails my thoughts on Undertale. The combination of a clever narrative and some unique gameplay mechanics that don't immediately fall flat on their face served as the perfect distraction from how painfully average Undertale really is.
