Complete lack of middle market games. Most games were bland, dumbed down, AAA shit that were trying to be Hollywood movies instead of games. Almost no games that weren't FPSs, third-person shooters, or third person action games.
Also, most PS3s don't have backwards compatibility with the PS2. Not a huge downside for the 7th gen in general, but very annoying nonetheless.

Can we stop focusing so much on marketing and top notch graphics? The money poured into these it's killing so many possible games.
It's simply NOT feasible to publish and develop a game without knowing it's gonna be a hit nowdays, Capcom literally asks for proof if a game will sell x amount of units before even saying yes.
It wasn't, it was amazing. It broke down the most barriers and brought about a whole new era of developer proliferation.

I also think it was just a curly time because, remember, this is when people were starting to transition from CRT to HD/LCD monitors. Therefore, PS3 and the 360 couldn't really be enjoyed until people moved to HD/LCD.

Only difference between the 7th gen and any other was that the 7th gen was the only gen in history where you basically HAD to buy multiple systems -- easily two or more in this case -- to get any real decent number of quality games.
Had a Wii? GREAT! You've got light gun shooters, minigames, individual sports, and a handful of great misc. exclusives in other genres. AND THAT'S IT.
Had a PS3/Xbox 360? GREAT! You've got FPSes, team sports, racers, 3D action, fighting, and WRPG. AND THAT'S IT.
Had a DS? GREAT! You've got adventure games, JRPG, and tons of oddball exclusives. AND THAT'S IT.
Wanted a complete and fulfilling gaming experience that covered the full spectrum of what gaming had to offer over the entire generation? Well then you had better have plunked down some serious fucking cash for AT LEAST two consoles plus a portable. And maybe gotten into PC gaming as well for the MMOs and RTSes and whatever else.
IF you could even afford all this shit then it was still a major hassle and required an unprecedented level of time commitment and effort to keep up with the hobby.
So that in a nutshell is why the 7th gen disappointed/pissed off so many people. Every previous gen you could get one system and have a complete gaming experience. Atari 2600, NES, PS1, and PS2 offered everything you needed. Even in the 16-bit gen both SNES and Genesis had a little of everything and each system's library was strong enough to not need a second console. The 7th was the only real exception to this rule. Even the current gen is seeing a repeat of the norm with the PS4.
