My uncles says it's amazing and his absolute favorite game of all time, so what am I in for?

Continuing to have an uncle with cool taste, I guess.
>>
>>323971721
Basically, it has two different combat systems. One is a lot more fun than the other, but I think that switching between the two kept each reasonably fresh. The story and characters are the main draw though, and while it is unfortunately unfinished, the plot is arguably the most ambitious and one of the best in vidya. The dungeon crawling is reasonable enough, too.
>>
How long of a game is it? I have trouble committing to 25+ hours if it doesn't really hook me.
>>
>>323971121
It's pretty underrated, but it's far from perfect. The story is ridiculously convoluted, and the 2nd disk was gutted to hell and back because of FF8, which basically turns the game into a slideshow of events. Also there's this one part where you have to climb a tower and it sucks dick.

Still a great game though, if you're into JRPGs.

It's not like you can skip dialogue or cutscenes, and there aren't really shortcuts to cheese past gameplay sections, so "rushing" doesn't mean much other than knowing the critical path by heart
>>
>>323972936
Ah okay, as long as a good chunk of it is story progression I think I'll be able to stick it through to the end. Hows the difficulty on it? I've been playing Vagrant story and it has been kicking my ass.

I was thinking about buying it so I looked at the Wikipedia page
> Reviews particularly praised the storyline with multiple subplots, the gameplay, the characters, the themes (including allusions to Jungian psychology, Freudian thought, and Gnostic spirituality)

Themes maybe for Xenosaga 1

2 and 3 get fucked over with Sorya Saga leaving after 1 and the music also gets fucked over with Tanaka leaving after 1 as well.

Sure they still follow the skeleton that Saga left, but you can feel how much the plot suffers because of her leaving.

>>323976310
I don't necessarily disagree but I feel the way it ended up was that XS1 used the themes to establish the universe and then 2 and 3 followed the character journeys through that universe.

Though, yes, I do wish people didn't start jumping ship when they did. And that maybe the art direction was more consistent (either one or three were acceptable IMO). And that Shion/KOS-MOS stayed the most important characters instead of shifting to Jr. as the main protagonist for some reason.
>>
>>323977072
They didn;t really jump ship.

From what I remember, Namco let them go. For Sorya Saga, it was the beginning of a sprial of events that lead to the still born of her baby and her attempted suicide. For Tanaka and Mitsuda, I don't think they ever did anything with Namco after they were let go. So obviously there is some bad blood there as well.
>>
>>323977356
It's been such a long time and I remember the rumor mill abounded back then because news was so hard to come by so I do remember hearing multiple accounts.

To be frank, I'm surprised we even got Ep3. I remember finding it at Best Buy not even realizing it came out because of the lack of press the game had.

Honestly this game could count as a guilty pleasure, but you're not in a minority if you play it actually. It's got a great story. But like others have said, it's an incomplete game and it's gameplay is not the best. I really would've liked revisiting places, like Bledavik and Nisan, but you just can't at disc 2. I really, really yearn for an actual remake of this game, where they had a complete budget and didn't limit so many things. This game is amazing, and you can still feel it's potential for so much more at the end.

Where in X? I was also under the impression that the White Whale is from the same era of ships as the one from Gears.

>>323980746

Sort of. Gears had a huge universe established for entries past the first, yet they never came to full fruition. Saga and Blade X are reinterpretations of different chunks of Gears lore.

In Saga 3 characters, plot devices and story are directly lifted from Gears, and exist as huge intentional nods (which some think are more than nods..)

What site is this? Interesting...
>>
>>323980746
It's more like they keep trying to make a bunch of games in the same series and they keep not selling enough to fund it.

Gears was supposed to be 5 in a series of 6. Supposedly through interpretations of Perfect Works, the Saga games were all supposed to be Episode 3 or something of Gears. Saga itself was supposed to be 6 games and got cut down to 3. As for Blade, I don't know how that fits in but it keeps having things from Gears and Saga show up.

Not at all

If there is one thing you must know about Taka

HE LOVES REFERENCING GAMES HE WAS A PART OF.

Lucca explains how the save system works in Xenogears, for example.

Also, you have to realize that after Xenogears, Taka kept on trying to tell the same story differently due to each other company owning the rights of the previous game. He made Xenogears and left Square when he realized that he would be stuck making Final Fantasy games for the rest of his career and not make his own game.

He then went to Namco and tried project Noah again with Xenosaga, which shares a lot of motifs and themes with Xenogears. And again, we see references to Xenogears in Xenosaga, jr. is just another Billy in looks, you have Weltall, Weltall Id, Elly's Gear, G-Element, Maria Balthasar and her dad, and Jin wearing a very Citan like outfit in 3.

Xenoblade is pretty much the first game where Taka actually is able to complete it fully without any drastic cuts and it shows in the ending.

Xenoblade X is more like an attempt to yet again do Project Noah.

>>323981241

Nothing personnel kid but you probably missed the boat. It was a great game in 1996. In 2016 you just might not have the patience for it unless you have an affinity for animu, giant mechs, or just an ability to tolerate/appreciate an old game.

I've been playing this for the first time myself recently, I just got into disc 2 a couple weeks ago.

The combat is really fun outside of mechs, but the mech combat is pretty boring.

The pacing between gameplay and story is pretty bad, which is to be expected because it was supposed to be a 4 disc came, but it was rushed down to a 2 disc game, but the pacing is especially bad in disc 2 which was probably slapped together in a week or two, basically instead of playing through events in the story, a character sits in a chair on screen and tells you what happened, the game just becomes story→boss→story→boss→story→dungeon→story, and so on.

The game isn't really as great as it's fans claim it to be, but it is a decent game, the rushed development just really ruins it.

disc 1 is like that, there's little freedom to travel around until talking to the right person which spurs lengthy boxes of text, after which random encounters every two steps happen while on a straight trek to the next exposition dump it's pretty much the same thing

i disagree

it's ok but i think it's severely overrated (especially when people claim it's one of the best stories ever written)

gameplay is standard PS1 JRPG stuff. mech battles suck ass

but can that guy fisticuff with Mechs?

It's literally just entering the same combo every single time. Which is really just an illusion draped over a normal attack command.

all i did was mash buttons at random. well animated for what they are but it's mindless and straight forward. gear fights on the other hand are much slower paced and are awkwardly animated and modeled (unsurprisingly for 1997 ps1 standards)

But at least you weren't forced everywhere in disc 1, you still had freedom, it was pretty much like any other JRPG, just with worse pacing between dialogue and gameplay. In disc 2 you have no freedom at all, you just go from one thing to the next via white or black screen.

but there's literally nothing to do without manually traveling to the next designated plot area

Wasn't this supposed to be the spiritual successor to Chrono Trigger or something, or no?

Anything with robot designs as good as the ones in this one? I enjoyed Xenoblade X, but the design of the robots was not even close to as good.

Its like an anime with a good plot but a shitton of fillers.

It get good literally 40hours+

I've said it before, but Xenogears is a one of a kind game that everyone needs to play at least once.
It's also kind of terrible.

if you're going to play the games, i just wanna let you know that the first game is pretty meh and almost feels like a demo or prototype for the second game which is better in literally every single way

too bad kojima got fired and konami turned into a pachinko company which destroys any chance of a third game ever being made

somewhat. there is some staff overlap. it has some graphics / sounds / style similarities with other mid 90s squaresoft games like treasure of the rudras, chrono trigger, sd3 and mario rpg (like in this video that door opening sound is straight out of smrpg >>323983085)

What I'm trying to say is that disc 1 still feels like a game, disc 2 feels like a book that requires you to press X to turn the page.
