I love D2, but probably most of my characters got auto-deleted by now and it's a pain to start anew. You actually have to trade with people, and those few who still play the game don't want your trash. It's impossible to find something that people actually want so you can start getting the fun items. I'm one of those people who played D2 since launch but mostly in short bursts, so I never really got Enigma or a full Tal'rasha or other more expensive set.
Honestly I like D3 more because you get drops you can actually use and you can get gear for the build you actually want to use in a decent timeframe. Also thanks to personal loot you don't get fucked over by 7 people with loot bots instantly picking up everything. I fucking hated that so much.
That said, I really miss some features of D2, like more players in a game or necro class.

It's a Diablo 1 mod and pretty fun. If you feel like replaying D1 definitely give it a shot.
Adds a few new classes like necromancer and gives each class 5 unique skills. Necromancers can raise skeletons, zombies, revive dead mobs and have corpse explosion while having access to the usual spells. Warriors get melee-like abilities like charge or cleave.
Also makes the game HD with configurable stretching ratio and adds some Diablo 2 features like personal stash, gambling, waypoints, and half a dozen new dungeons and quests.

It feels fairly good and balanced, though I only played through it once or twice.
The developer is extremely autistic tho. I looked at their forums and anyone mentioning cheating is permbanned instantly. Mind you that the game only works in single player now, but the guy went as far as implementing memory obfuscating algorithms so you can't cheat engine it, and it also recalculates your stats every time you load the game to make sure you didn't edit the save file.

It's pretty fun for what it is, actually. The story was garbage, but it picks up again in act V. The end game is split across a massive amount of difficulties, and things may seem complex but it's not really that bad. Just get to 70 and do the highest difficulty you can manage while still maintaining a fast killing pace. Regular rifts will give you keys to do greater rifts, which is a good place to gear up.
It's the kind of game I play for a few hours every few weeks when I just want mindless fun.
It's cool but the new system adding principal stat via gem is fucking grindy.
Also I hate bounties and this shit is mandatory.
