It's not so much the content of the cover that is the problem for me, it's how they present it.
With a video game cover there needs to be an easy focus, something your eyes are immediately drawn towards, and then there can be more smaller detail in the background.

The original TP cover had a simple and eye-catching cover, a split between wolf and link. Here it's a bunch of stuff thrown in along with it, and you can't really tell what's supposed to be at centre stage here unless you look more carefully.

Just like in Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker, you have a character telling you about him long, long before you get to meet him. It's a little earlier than halfway through the game.
Putting Midna's true form on the cover is a pretty big spoiler, but it's kind of always been in the official art so it isn't exactly new. Wish it wasn't there, though.

The American boxart is better.
It makes it clearer who the main characters are. Link and Imp Midna. They're both on steads, so ti both appear important.
The real Midna and Zelda are back to back, because they represent essentially the same thing on either light or twilight.
The color choice is actually spot on. The right side is a beautiful green, and the left side is red. To symbolize light and dark. However, there is a gradient of gold that comes from above. This is perfect because Green going into gold, creates the visual of a warm natural light. The kind Zelda would be bathed in. And red going into gold creates that brownish, unnatural light. The same kind that the twilight world is bathed in.
In summary: better color, better composition, better symbolism. US boxart: 10/10
