I always go with the canon name if there is one because I'm terrible with names. Either way, characters you have to name usually have no personality outside of what you give them, which makes them very uninteresting. Not a fan of blank slate characters, especially in RPGs where they usually stand out like a sore thumb.
It depends on whether it allows me to pick between a male or a female, and whether it's a fantasy game or not.
