I've been using him in a few locals lately and he does very good against Shiek and Zero Skill Slut as he can force an approach by crouching plus his damage output and KO potential is very good.

D-throw -> d-special is a true combo at lower percentages
up-air is essential and can combo at lower percentages
nair has been buffed since the last patch, it's now easier to hit with both kicks of the nair
side-b is obviously a very useful tool. side-b -> d-tilt or side-b -> dair -> whatever you want are both basically very useful tools. also learn to tech chase as well
learn the hitbox of his dair, it's pretty invaluable
don't always try to go for, "le epic HARD READS xD" all the time. G-dorf obviously depends on them but don't be obvious, and he has plenty of kill moves that don't rely on said hard reads, like f-tilt, bair, even fair iirc

Well hey, if you ever do decide to try out Villager, a fun thing to do is you can do your dash attacks off of platforms to throw pots at people.
Also, never ride a Lloid rocket unless you're either
A) Recovering with clear knowledge that you'll most likely be punished
B) Sure that it will hit and kill
The only edgeguarding technique I participate in is whenever I get someone off stage, I just repeatedly drop bowling balls with the hopes that it'll spike 'em :^)

If you want to play a zoning Villager, always have a Lloid rocket out.
If you're close enough, shorthop to dair works pretty well. Shorthop to fair or bair works on bigger characters like Bowser or DK.
Downtilt and uptilt kill at high percents.

His neutral air is a great combo tool, and also great for edgeguarding, that being if you play Villager like that.
Also, his fair isn't that bad. It can be hard to hit sometimes, but it's a fairly good attack.
