Personally, I preordered the Oculus for June (and won't need to pay till June). If the Vive comes out in April and is better, I can just cancel my preorder. It'll be pointless for gaming as long as there's no killer apps. I really can't think of any kind of depth it could add to gameplay. I'm more excited to use it for events like concerts and sports.
Also it's just not as practical as a regular monitor.

In principle, it's more practical. In practice, the pixel density is still quite a few magnitudes off being able to use it as a virtual monitor, 4k is the baseline for being able to read any particular amount of text comfortably and it'll probably be a while until we get there.

Rift re-purposes a lot of technology from smartphones like gyros and the screens, they are refined for VR but it's all true and tested technology.
The concept of headtracking VR is nothing new either, in the 90's it was all the rage in arcades even if it was pretty crude.
Rift is merely a refinement of these concepts.
