once you beat Cathedral Ward/Hemwick, it gets worse.
Once you go to Cainhurst Castle it gets better again, then it gets worse again. Micolash is a high point, great boss, but the entirety of his stage is horrible.
The DLC is great again though, so save it for last.

the lovecraftian stuff might simply not be your thing. personally, i prefer the gothic victorian areas far more than the eldritch inspired ones. so that means Central Yharnam/Cathedral Ward, places like that. Hemwick too. meanwhile I hate Nightmare Frontier and mensis, and Yaharghul post-rom while spooky, is just not very interesting

Nightmare of Mensis would be one of the best levels if it weren't for frenzy. The level design is beautiful, the enemies on the inside are great and it also has some of the best secret areas.
