There are small graphical flaws in a lot of beautiful games, and that's acceptable. Dark Souls 2 on the other hand is almost uncompromisingly hideous. Low quality repeating textures and baffling geometry. Look at the Primal Bonfire rooms. Jesus Christ.

Sad reality is that DS2 is not really a bad game, but it's a terrible Souls game.

I played through it and DLCs couple months ago, and while I don't regret spending 60 hours on it, I have no plans of replaying it anytime soon, if ever. Yui fucked the core of the game up and Bamco made sure the rest is just as bad.

Beautiful screenshots, but most of the game does not look anywhere near this good. Majula is a great area and the skyboxes in Dark Souls 2 are often very stunning, but you spend 95% of your time running through almost completely empty boxy rooms with high ceilings and low resolution repeating textures with flat lighting.

There's some beautiful areas like most areas in the DLC, Shrine of Amana, the whole section of Aldia's Keep onward and the Doors of Pharros, but pretty much any area that doesn't have a special visual flare to it is pretty hideous.

People forget how big DaS2 is in general, even though it doesn't wholly excuse its visual shortcomings.

Most areas are pretty horrible looking in one way or another. There are some areas I don't mind, like Forest of the Fallen Giants looks okay, but it still suffers from the same issues the entire game suffers from, it just doesn't look quite as bad because a desolate castle can be technically shoddy and still look alright.

Actually released in a passable state rather than a half-assed mess of concepts and ideas with some parts so unfinished they had to apologize for it.
Oh and the covenants actually do something.

Of course it has its problems, every fucking game in the series has major problems, it's like at the last day of the deadline they're still throwing around new ideas.. Hate DaS2 as much as you want, but it's still a more complete game than DaS1 will ever be.

It's ugly but to me the bigger problem is that it's full of bullshit. The enemies literally do 360 spins to prevent backstabbing. If you don't want me to backstab enemies then why did you even implement that mechanic? The enemy poise is fucked up, strike type weapons are overpowered. It's also tedious. Tedious as fuck. Oh look, another boss, big fucker, huge weapon, resistant to magic/fire/lighting/poison/bleed/piercing weapons, cannot be parried, cannot be backstabbed has like 20000 HP so the fight takes forever. Tedious. Or the whole titanite chunk nonsense. They literally want you to buy PS+ just so you can farm those chunks with belltower queers. 'Cause there's like 15 of them total available on NG. Or enemies on the road to boss that you have to kill because they cannot be outrunned and for some reason entering the fog door takes a lot longer. Or shields, there's so much latency with shields. Or infinite healing items because we want the casual audience.

Fuck DaS 2. It's still decent at times, even good but fuck it.

How about you look at 99% of the game instead?
Majority of the game lacks specular maps of any kind, they cut them out to save frames.

Anyone have that pic with comparison of armors in DS1 and DS2? The one where you can also see Moonlight sword.

Okay it's cool that you played it a lot.

But I can still make a pretty good argument for why it's a bad game.

For example most of the bosses were lazy garbage that they hashed out in two seconds. They either dumped a bunch of enemies in one place and called it a boss or it was some huge thing with three different slashing attacks to dodge. They just spammed them out like nothing and instead of it being awesome to see that obvious boss fog-gate like it was in previous games it just made me groan in
annoyance.

They also put tons of damage sponge enemies around just to slow down progress to pad the game. The Syan soldiers being just one good example, especially in the area outside of Velstadt. Another good one is the Drakekeepers and the long stairway to Ancient Dragon.

The areas were also spammed to fuck and completely devoid of life or personality. The only two that I thought were worth anything were probably Shrine of Amana and The Pit.

They also shit on basic game mechanics and design philosophy hard. Having i-frames attached to a stat was fucking stupid, soul memory was fucking stupid, the way bonfires worked was fucking stupid. They fucked up on so many different levels it's amazing to me that anyone dares call it anything better than just mediocre.

No, DaS2 does have true dynamic lighting (as I stated), but it doesn't show up in like 3/4 of the game because they didn't bother adding proper lighting sources (most likely due to time constraints).

DaS just half-assed it with fake static lighting on the armour sets and I haven't played BB, but I believe there are issues with the lighting there too.

DaS armour does look better in the areas in DaS2 that don't have lighting, as I have already stated for the 3rd time.

However, if you examine it up close it looks pretty fake. Similar situation to DaS2 looking okay from far away, but if you start to scrutinize the textures you realize it's mostly repeating.

The only big graphical issue I can think of in DS1 that I saw EVERY TIME was in Lost Izalith. If you stand at the top of the small stairway infront of the Bed of Chaos boss door and look over the hand rails, you can see behind all the mountains and walls that make up Izalith and the floor is just untextured void. I have the game both on PC and 360 but I played more on PC sop I don't know if it's just version-specific. If someone could go have another look that'd be great.

Went passed it without much of an issue, still stupid how they expected most new players to know that knights behind a staircase are going to rush in and fuck you up. it seems like there whole idea of game design was "Let the player die to it, and then they'll realize it's there so can counter it xD" which is pretty stupid in a game where you get punished for dying.

DaS2 really is the epitome of quality over quantity. Not only the size of the B-Team but all the mobs thrown in all the already claustrophobic areas, tonnes of re-skinned/repainted enemies, bosses, and equipment.

They didn't know how the make the game challenging so they resorted to putting mobs everywhere.

It still has paintings, the bigass dragon skeleton (that fucking disappears Jesus), those mirrors that summon Shades, monster cages all around (which is kinda dumb but funny at the same time), the trapped schizo guy, side rooms with unique enemies and clutter, an acid pool and those funny green flasks next to the bonfire.

Visually speaking it's a fucking marvel compared to other interiors, like that poison area or the Sinner boss arena.

The game is an improvement in literally every aspect except level design. And even then not really, only the first half on DS1 is mind blowing, while DS2 is consistent all the time.
Game is harder while being less frustrating, bosses finally take more than 2 tries to kill, gameplay is improved and dual wielding works fine. What exactly is wrong with DS2?
